SUMMARY
The Reporting & Analysis Accountant is responsible for ensuring operating income is reported accurately which includes variance and trend analysis as well as ensuring transactions are recorded and analyzed in a timely and accurate manner and in accordance with company policies. Primary responsibilities include management reporting for specific oil and gas midstream assets which requires ongoing communication and coordination with Operations Accountants on all aspects of the monthly accounting close. Duties include timely and accurate monthly analysis and reporting of MPLX G&P operational results within assigned deadlines. Duties also include assisting in various other monthly close processes and statistical reporting. Successful candidate will have the ability and initiative to transition monthly from intense close deadline schedule to more cognitive off-close project work.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist in the preparation and completion of all tasks associated with the monthly accounting and closing cycle.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining tools and reports using Business Warehouse and MS Excel to aid in process improvement initiatives relating to MPLX G&P reporting processes.
  • Ensures transactions are recorded, documented, reviewed and supported in accordance with company policies and SOX controls.
  • Prepare monthly account reconciliations, journal entries, monthly variance results, and prepare monthly reporting schedules.
  • Analyzes performance reports, margin account variance analyses, key operating statistics, price/volume variances and operating results on a monthly basis.
  • Answers and resolves internal and external customer inquiries, including audit inquiries from external auditors, Internal Auditing, government agencies, and producer auditors.
  • Provide expertise to others in the MPLX G&P community for the processes in your area of responsibility.
  • Analyzes both operational and financial data related to estimates, prior period adjustments, revenues, cost of goods sold, and facility expenses for plants and systems within MPLX G&P.
  • Complete yearly RRC annual filings.
  • Understands the full range of the applicable operational accounting system (e.g. Quorum Suite and/or Right Angle) functionality, detailed understanding of the specific assets for which the operations accounting business units are responsible and also has a substantial understanding of the midstream business.
  • Applies experience, knowledge, analytical skills, and leadership skills to solve issues, establish efficient accounting processes/procedures and controls, and work prioritization.
  • Works with other business unit accounting departments to ensure effective communication, consistency, and use of best practices.
  • Performs various design, testing and implementation roles on ad hoc projects to enhance related systems, reporting templates and information requests.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's degree required. Focus in accounting, business or finance preferred.
  • 2+ years of work experience as a degreed professional.
  • 1-3 years of oil and gas industry experience preferred.
  • Experience with SAP or a similar accounting system.

SKILLS
  • Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Ability to work in a challenging and fast-paced environment.

  • Detail-oriented and strong analytical skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Advanced MS Excel skills including worksheet template designs with complex formulas as well as Word and have the aptitude to effectively learn company-specific accounting systems and reporting tools.
  • Excellent organization skills.
  • Flexible to work overtime during peak periods.
