The State Register-Journal in Springfield, IL is part of the USA TODAY NETWORK and looking for a self-motivated reporter to find difference-making stories in Springfield and central Illinois. Specifically, the focus will be on accountability and solutions-oriented journalism, routing out untold stories found in court files and police cold cases, and human-scale stories of broad interest to our readers.


The ideal candidate is an investigative reporter at heart who has the skills to dig into an issue but also the storytelling ability that shows leadership with impactful journalism, captivates readers and motivates actions for the betterment of the community.

They should be adept at source development, have experience using public records, databases and other digital-focused tools; bring a rock-solid knowledge of AP style; and demonstrate a proven ability to meet daily and long-range deadlines.

Previous accountability reporting and two to three years of experience at a daily newspaper or equivalent media are preferred.


The right candidate understands or is eager to learn what residents here care about. The reporter is SEO savvy, can spot high-interest topics using engagement tools like Google Trends and can work independently but also thrives in collaborative environments.


Our team focuses on four key areas:

Key questions local readers are asking on search and creating solutions-oriented journalism in companion to local topics in the news, what's trending and part of the conversation in the Springfield area

  • Help readers understand the local importance/impact of national news and localizing national trending stories in a service or solutions-oriented journalism way
  • Content that answers reader questions about breaking news and amplifies breaking news coverage
Recognize the local buzz or lighter breaking news. This includes content relevant to reader curiosity, an engagement series, or light accountability work. Also, evergreen, seasonal ideas.The successful candidate will need to:
  • Possess strong writing, reporting and multi-media skills
  • Display excellent news judgment and journalism ethics
  • Be a constant generator of story ideas and able to produce content early and often during peak audience periods.
  • Have a knack for SEO-driven headlines and other audience-driving strategies.
  • Be nimble and able to adjust swiftly to shifting news demands
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in journalism or any other subject or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2-3 years reporting experience, preferably in a digitally focused news organization.
  • Commitment to detail, accuracy and fairness.
  • Ability to multi-task and excel under deadline pressure, using time efficiently.
  • This role requires a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer drug screen, motor vehicle record check and background check.
