Job Summary/Basic Function:
Provide in-depth, specialized, and/or comprehensive advising to faculty and students regarding class choices, curriculum options, majors, departmental and University policies and procedures, and other academic needs.
This position is a campus-based position with limited work from home opportunities.
Department Overview:
The goal of the Advising and Academic Support Center is to help Boise State students become more effective and aware college students by providing quality academic advising and support services. We value a collaborative, student-centered approach that strives to empower all students to advocate for their own learning.
Level Scope:
Fully competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. May provide guidance and assistance to entry level professionals and/or support employees.
Essential Functions:
60% of Time the Academic Development and Recovery Academic Advisor will:
  • Maintain positive connections with faculty and staff in focus area to facilitate student connections.
  • Coordinate communication of information related to important dates, deadlines and procedures to advisees.
  • Monitors student progress and suggests and implements corrective actions with students encounter academic difficulties. Meets with students with academic probation suspension or academic misconduct issues.
  • Keeps current on university and college policies and procedures, and rules and regulations to assist students in meeting academic requirements.
  • Acts as a source of information for prospective students, and actively recruits students through participation in various university and college sponsored orientations and events.

35% of Time the Academic Development and Recovery Academic Advisor will:
  • Provide individual and group support through academic advising, academic coaching sessions, and workshops for students that are experiencing academic difficulties, or are considered at-risk, probationary, and/or reinstated.
  • Assist students in understanding university policies and requirements.
  • Provide advising support for various appeals processes, including academic appeals, academic reinstatements, and Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) for financial aid.
  • Provide outreach and administrative support to the Academic Alert referral system and additional early warning interventions.
  • Engage in assessment, feedback, and curriculum development in Bronco Rebound probation workshop.
  • Make appropriate referrals (e.g. career counseling, personal counseling, financial aid).
  • Support academic success and self-regulated learning through Academic Coaching.
  • Support and assist Major Exploration and First-Year transition team as necessary in advising and programmatic initiatives.
  • Use student-success tools and resources, including PeopleSoft, DegreeTracker, Slate and/or Salesforce Student Success Hub, and Canvas LMS, etc.).
  • Support the coordination and ongoing development of probation interventions including but not limited to: Bronco Rebound, ACAD 102, and group workshops.
  • Support cross-departmental and advisor training around probation and dismissal processes.
  • Participates in new-student orientations and supports university-wide enrollment and retention initiatives.
  • Supports university-wide AASC events and operations including, but not limited to Bronco Social and Bronco Welcome week.

5% of Time the Academic Development and Recovery Academic Advisor will:
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • The ability to effectively communicate information and ideas
  • Ability to develop specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize and accomplish the tasks at hand
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of institutional policies
  • Good knowledge of: discussing career and educational goals with students; identifying student strengths and weaknesses.
  • Experience: in student counseling, development, education or related field.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree from an accredited four-year college/university in Student Affairs Personnel, Counseling, Higher Education, or related fields
  • One year of academic advising experience in a higher-education
