Job Title: Academic Counselor (CUPO/HEOP)

FLSA Status: Non- Exempt

Range: $20- $23 based on experience

Position Summary:

The Academic Counselor of CUPO/HEOP manages various tasks related to the persistence and graduation of students within the five grant-funded programs; Arthur O Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP), The Collegiate Science & Technology Entry Program (CSTEP), The Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program (McNair), and The Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation Program (LSAMP).

The Academic Counselor will provide management of student caseloads related to academic guidance, personal support and career counseling. Coordinate and provide support for prospective students; assist in coordinating career, cultural and other workshops/activities, assist Associate Director in summer programming. In addition, the Academic Counselor will manage all communication and marketing logistics using traditional digital and social media marketing techniques.

General Purpose: Assist in student management of the four grant funded programs.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the academic status of students; contact students and faculty to discuss academic problems, progress and remediation needs; analyze incoming student academic progress reports, following up with students and faculty as necessary.
  • Meet regularly with students providing academic guidance, community integration opportunities, skill development, personal support, and career counseling toward goals of retention, optimal student performance, and graduation
  • Streamline and steer outgoing department communications through the use of social media.
  • Assist in soliciting student participation in activities.
  • Manage confidential HEOP student files for accuracy and grant compliance.
  • Track and maintain student roster for communication and reporting purposes.
  • Hire, train and supervise student advisory board for HEOP and CUPO
  • Manage communication logistics to students using traditional, digital and social marketing techniques.
  • Facilitate data collection for assessment and reporting obligations as needed
  • Recruit and publicize across programs and across campus all events for HEOP and CUPO
  • Through social media venues market all programs, workshops and events
  • Coordinate textbook, laptop and calculator loan program.
  • Coordinate transportation logistics for student travel Coordinate Summer Pre-Freshman Experience (SPREE) and HEOP academic year program logistics to include but not limited to class scheduling, room reservations, program supplies
  • Teach FY100 class during SPREE
  • Assist Associate Director in planning, and implementation of mandatory summer bridge program to prepare incoming first year students academically from underrepresented backgrounds to transition to Clarkson University
  • Assist Associate Director in hireing, train and supervise all summer program staff that include residential advisors, counselors and tutors
  • Assist Associate Director in conducting academic skills workshops for the Summer Pre-freshmen Experience (SPREE) Seminar.

Minimal Qualifications: Must have demonstrated ability working with culturally diverse and disadvantaged student populations in a confidential manner

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in academic support programs for underrepresented students in higher education.
