JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Academic Counselor position in the Morgan Academic Center (MAC) reports to the Associate Director for Football Academic Support Services. The MAC is an academic support unit that provides services to student-athletes and reports directly to the Vice-President and Dean for Undergraduate Education.
The Academic Counselor's responsibilities include the following:
  • Coordinate the academic support and counseling services for assigned football student-athletes which involves tracking and monitoring student-athlete academic progress and eligibility
  • Communicate student-athlete academic progress to coaching staffs, athletic administration, and the MAC Director
  • Teach one section of the student-athlete first-year seminar course (part of the Penn State Alumni Association First-Year Enrichment Program)
  • Refer student-athletes to other appropriate University resources, as needed
  • Meet with prospective student-athletes and families throughout the recruiting process
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director and Associate Director (these duties require frequent collaboration with the MAC Associate Director, MAC Assistant Director, and numerous University staff that supports students)
  • Evening and weekend hours will be required (study hall program and recruiting)

Education and experience:
This job will be filled as a Counselor 2 or 3 depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typically requires a Master's degree in counselor education, college student personnel, psychology, social work, education, higher education administration, or a related discipline or higher plus one (1) year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher-level jobs.
The position must maintain strict adherence to NCAA and Big Ten Conference rules and regulations affecting the sport and the University.
Background checks:
This position requires the following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
