Schuler is a private, non-profit college access program. We currently serve over 800 high school and college Scholars in partnership with 15 high schools spread throughout Chicagoland and two locations in Milwaukee.

What A Day in the Life of an Academic Coach Is Like
The Schuler Scholar Program is seeking an Academic Coach who will deliver Schuler programs and serve as a mentor for Scholars at Zion Benton High School in Zion, IL. Academic Coaches work directly with Scholars in one-on-one and in group settings. Candidates should be passionate about working with students from diverse backgrounds, including first generation college students. The qualified candidate will display strong academic achievement, be highly organized, possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills and effectively work independently as well as in teams. Experience with providing academic support and mentorship to learners is a plus.
Responsibilities:
- Primary:
- Serve as an academic mentor and coach for a caseload of Scholars (approximately 21-29 20-min meeting/wk)
- Facilitate 1:1 Schuler program sessions, focusing on topics including time management, study strategies, self-advocacy, workload management, identity exploration, academic skill-building, and building healthy academic habits for success in high school and college.
- Implement individualized academic interventions (Tier 1 & Tier 2) under the direction and guidance of the Educational Counselor.
- Facilitate large group (20-30 Scholars) after school sessions that focus on academic success and college readiness
- Maintain comprehensive note taking system and academic data-tracking for Scholar caseload
- Secondary
- Plan and chaperone Scholars to cultural exposures including theater, ballet, opera, and museums
- Lead or support other required school based projects (e.g. Scholar Selection Process, Summer College Program Application process)
- Occasional:
- Chaperone Scholars as needed to a variety of Schuler sponsored events including after school and weekend events
- Chaperone trips (week-long college visits, leadership camp)
- Plan and facilitate a range of summer programs
Every year we seek Academic Coach candidates who can speak Spanish. Because a significant portion of our Scholars come from Spanish speaking families, it is critical to have Spanish Coordinators to assist in both oral and written Spanish communication.
Academic Coaches receive program specific training throughout the school year. Schuler ensures that Academic Coaches feel prepared, confident and supported while working with students and facilitating programs. Academic Coaches can also take advantage of various professional development opportunities.
