Job description

The Registration & Records department is looking to hire an Academic Advisor who serves as the educational planner and advocate for new and current undergraduate students. Provides comprehensive advising and support concerning academic plans and progress, academic schedule, choice of major(s), activities and resources. Assists students in making strategic decisions about educational goals to achieve their graduation.

Job Responsibilities

  • Advise new and current students regarding full time undergraduate educational programs, resources, requirements, academic status, matriculation, opportunities, options, and administrative processes at the College.
  • Guide students through the process of identifying strengths and interests, formulating personalized educational plans, selecting classes, and collaborating with Student Success coaches to develop strategies for academic success and a successful student experience.
  • Provide support and case management by connecting students with appropriate resources such as: Student Success Coaches, Writing Center and the Library.
  • Update and maintain accurate student academic data in Jenzabar. Uphold FERPA regulations. Understand, explain, and apply Cornish’s academic regulations, policies and procedures as they relate to students.
  • Develop informative material for individual and group student advising sessions.
  • Create and update hard copy and digital resources and tools for students.
  • Present and/or participate in workshops on academic and study skills.
  • Participate in recruitment activities such as: semester/term information sessions.
  • Prepare and present information and resources to current students.
  • Conduct graduation audits to determine if students have met graduation requirements.
  • Monitor individual student progress and perform proactive advising outreach to students.
  • Prepare supporting documents for student advising files.
  • Interpret and apply academic policies for student degree requirements and academic progress as needed.
  • Collaborate with campus staff to identify creative solutions to enhance the student’s overall educational experience.
  • Implement retention action plans for academic programs.
  • Pursue exit interviews with students who withdraw from the College in order to improve current retention plans and develop new plans to address emerging issues.
  • Participate actively in various College committees and task forces.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of experience.
  • Experience in advising or counseling college-level students with an emphasis on academic program design, administration, and coordination in a regulation-intensive educational system serving a diverse student body; or other relevant work experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively and work productively in establishing and maintaining harmonious working relationships with a diverse population of staff and students.
  • Strong skills in critical thinking, administration, oral and written communication, and listening skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, adjust to varying or changing situations and willingness and initiative to take on a variety of tasks.
  • Must be organized, analytical, detail-oriented, and committed to continuous student success.
  • Ability to work on self-directed assignments with minimum supervision, and collaboratively in groups.
  • Sensitivity to diverse needs of students, and ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Knowledge of (or ability to learn) online student information systems (SIS), database records and platforms used in higher education (e.g., Jenzabar, Coursedog, Google Workspace).
  • Ability to use technology to supplement in-person advising, and willingness to explore and learn new and relevant technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field such as counseling, education, higher education administration, etc.
  • Three or more years of experience in advising or counseling college-level students with an emphasis on academic program design, administration, and coordination in a regulation-intensive educational system serving a diverse student body.
