Job Summary/Basic Function:About This Role:
Job Summary: The admissions counselor is responsible for working directly with LU admissions, Distance Learning, and department faculty in collecting, processing, documenting/storing and recommending candidates who submit essays and references for admissions. The admissions counselor also manages the Portfolium system where candidates upload other important documents specific to Educator Preparation.What You’ll Do:
- Assist students throughout the admissions process.
- Scores essays and references using a developed departmental rubric.
- Communicates weekly with distance education to advise enrollment for accepted candidates.
- Evaluate prospective student needs and building productive relationships by providing individualized assistance with goal identification, program expectations, payment/financial aid planning, and other program questions.
- Assist prospective students with ApplyTexas application, the Federal Application for Financial Aid (FAFSA), the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TAFSA), and other items to understand the enrollment system.
- Create weekly reports for the dean on admission status for departments.
- Communicate Portfolium information and assist candidates in understanding the documents needed and how to submit them.
- Monitor Portfolium daily for completed portfolios to qualify for admissions.
- Correspond with students in a professional student-centered model offering advice, resources, or referral to other campus resources.
- Provides advice, counsel, and assistance to graduate students on degree progress, deficiencies, and program expectations.
- Interpret and communicate accurate information about campus policies and degree requirements.
- Appropriately document all contact with students, including appointment notes, email, and phone conversations.
- Serve as the first point of contact for campus based graduate programs.
- Assist students throughout the graduate admissions process.
- Serve as a facilitator to bridge communication from student to graduate faculty.
- Providing knowledgeable and professional representation of Lamar University with students in groups, one-on-one, and during on and off campus events to increase community awareness.
- Attending events and making presentations to communicate with prospective students and their families to promote Lamar University and its programs.
- Perform additional duties as assigned. Other duties may be assigned to this position on a regular or occasional basis to respond to needs of the university.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
Three (3) years of experience.
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field.Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Work requires contacts with coworkers from other organizational units of the University and the general public. Resourcefulness is required to reach or adjust working agreements within departmental procedures and operating needs. Tact and judgment are requirements in obtaining or giving information of a confidential nature. This job title normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results. There is some opportunity for discretion when making selections among a few, easily identifiable choices. The assignment is usually reviewed upon completion. This job title requires a comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment of the organization. This job title has no budgetary responsibility.
