Academic Advisor - Kirkhof College of Nursing
Summary: The Office of Student Services (OSS) in the Kirkhof College of Nursing (KCON) is seeking a full-time Academic Advisor to collaborate with our OSS team to provide inclusive and intentional advising and support and foster a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming space for all students. The Academic Advisor will provide timely and accurate academic advising to graduate students and undergraduate students in the nursing major. The Academic Advisor will assist with Transfer Student Advising & Registration, First Year Advising & Registration and participate in other student support and advising events, programs and initiatives as needed throughout the year. This position is located on the Health campus in downtown Grand Rapids.
Required Qualifications and Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least one year of relevant experience in higher education.
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication, presentation, planning, public speaking, and organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work both autonomously and as a key member of a collaborative team.
Preferred Qualifications and Education:
  • Master’s degree in an academic advising related field such as College Student Affairs, Adult & Higher Education, Educational Leadership, or Counseling is strongly preferred.
  • Graduate degree in Nursing is preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of higher education work experience.
  • Professional experience in admissions and recruiting.
  • Understanding and application of college student development and advising theory.
  • A strong understanding and demonstrated desire for collaborative approaches to problem solving.
  • Demonstrated understanding of student transition and success issues especially with graduate students, first-generation, transfer and students from underrepresented backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with computer student information systems, advising tools, and web-based records and registration programs in alignment with the university policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced work environment and manage multiple tasks.
Responsibilities – Essential Functions:
  • Reports to Director of the Office of Student Services
  • Provide counseling to individual students on a wide range of issues including academics, financial aid, and personal career objectives (primarily students seeking a degree in nursing).
  • Maintain student records/data and accurate documentation.
  • Gather, review, and interpret student data for purposes of assessing guidance needs.
  • Plan and conduct group programs for prospective and current students.
  • Coordinate and publicize student activities and projects designed to ensure success and provide talent and leadership development.
  • Serve as a liaison with college officials, community agencies, and GVSU student support services for referral purposes.
  • Work in partnership with overall university advising initiatives to support freshman/transfer student orientations, student success activities (to enhance retention and on-time graduation), and communication across college/units.
  • Assist in student recruitment.
  • Review, select, develop and/or order advising materials.
  • Helps with student registration.
  • Assist in preparation of reports.
  • Participate in planned programs and activities offered by the KCON Office of Student Services team or GVSU Academic Advising program.
  • Serve as part of the OSS team in an ex-officio capacity on the KCON Curriculum Committee, Undergraduate Academic Affairs Committee, and Graduate Academic Affairs Committee.
  • Participate in community activities that foster connections, promote visibility for KCON, and enhance recruitment of diverse student populations (e.g. sHapE Camp, Career Day, KISD Health Science Early College Academy).
  • Develop, implement, and sustain Holistic Admissions review for applicants to KCON.
  • Perform related duties as assigned, specific to departmental needs and advisor status (Senior).
Salary: $50,000; Commensurate with experience
