Duties
This job opportunity is for an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic and is located in the Operations and Maintenance Unit, Support Services Branch, at the National Processing Center (NPC), U.S. Bureau of the Census located in Jeffersonville, Indiana. This unit is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the buildings of the National Processing Center.
This position is included in the bargaining unit.

The individual selected for this position will:
  • Install, maintain, and repair electrical and pneumatic control systems on air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating and firing equipment while assuring safe operating conditions, safety for occupants, security of property and personnel and compliance with energy conservation matters.
  • Troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment to determine cause of malfunction and extent of repair required, coordinate, and consult with technical and professional personnel on matters involving technical operating specifications.
  • Install necessary fixture control equipment of various voltages, run lines, make necessary connections, install conduit, and pull wires (normally from service switch on), make splices, solder connections and test completed work to assure proper operation.
  • Maintain and repair various types of installed refrigeration units, including both domestic and commercial refrigerators, water coolers, ice machines, and installed ventilating and air conditioning equipment by installing or repairing valves, steam lines, fittings, steam traps, strainers, radiators, pressure gauges, gaskets, pump parts, etc. Inspect and test system for leaks and proper operation.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on air conditioning and refrigeration equipment totaling approximately 2530 tons, including window units, 5- and 30-ton package, multiple chilled water circulating, and direct expansion coil central types of 15-to-150-ton capacity with heating and air conditioning operating, and 120-ton air conditioning and heating at FOB.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, including serve as occasional relief for Boiler Plant Operator, operate Forklift and load/unload trucks as needed, maintain inventory (including make, model, and other identifiers as well as quantity on hand) of parts/supplies/equipment used in the work, diagnose source of trouble on steam lines and related equipment and make needed repairs.

Tour of Duty: Monday - Friday. Hours will range between 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. An Alternate Work Schedule (AWS) OR four 10-hour days will be offered at a later time, after completion of required training. Alternate Work Schedule is an 80-hour biweekly basic work requirement that is scheduled in less than 10 days; i.e., eight 9-hour days/nights, one 8-hour day/night, and one day off. Positions may include evening or weekend work, hours will vary.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work performance requires maneuvering equipment into and out of specific locations while dismantling and reassembling. Mechanic frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Hoists, holders, and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large compressors, condensers, and chillers. Work performance requires working from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms and involves extensive standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in uncomfortable positions for long periods of time.
PHYSICAL EXAM: Selectee may be required to pass a physical examination, prior to the effective date of appointment to this position. This physical will include a chest x-ray. Cost of physical will be the responsibility of selectee.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside or outside and in dirt and grease. Is subject to cuts and bruises, fumes, and electric shock. Frequently works in awkward positions.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet the following certification requirement by the closing date of this announcement. Type I (small appliances) AND Type II (high pressure systems) Certification OR Universal certification is required. A copy of your certification must be provided with your application. Applicants who do not have this certification OR fail to provide proof of certification will be considered ineligible.
MUST HAVE A VALID STATE DRIVER'S LICENSE.

How You Will Be Evaluated
You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

  2. Demonstrate skill and knowledge of different types of "Chiller Technology."
  3. Ability to demonstrate skill of the brazing process.
