Secondary Counselor Job Description

Job Summary:

Under direct supervision of the Secondary Assistant Principal, the Secondary (6th- 12th Grade) Counselor will help children and young adults; especially those who have faced substantial life obstacles that previously have prevented academic success. The School Counselor will support the school’s mission and collaborate with individuals and organizations to promote all students’ academic, career and personal/social development. This position will encompass much of the standard areas of Nevada School Counseling Program model, but will go above and beyond, which might include non-traditional duties, e.g., test coordination, educational field trips, after-school homework administration, and scheduling to meet the needs of our students.

The Secondary Counselor will be expected to adhere to Amplus Academy’s professional standards as well as Nevada Department of Education licensure standards. Amplus Academy is a classical education charter school located in the southwest area of Las Vegas. Amplus Academy has two campuses serving Kindergarten- 12th Grade students.

Terms of Employment: 10-month per Contract of Employment (187 Day Calendar)

Salary:

The compensation for this position is in alignment with the Amplus Governing Board approved Salary Schedule; Salary Schedule based on years’ experience and degree held. Compensation for all positions are determined by the Governing Board and Administration of Amplus Academy. Consideration is given for experience and specialized skills in determining salary.

Salary Range: $57,500- $80,000 with 100% Employer Paid PERS

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Administers an appropriate guidance and counseling program that aligns with the Nevada State School Counseling Program Student Standards.

  • Delivers a system of individual student planning, responsive services, and system support within the guidance curriculum.

  • Complete assigned counseling duties

  • Collaborates with teachers to help students develop post-secondary plans including college or vocational school

  • Conducts goal-oriented counseling that is responsive to identified student needs and relative to student achievement and school success.

  • Collaborates with school personnel to assist students with developing skills that support academic achievement, high school graduation, and lifelong learning.

  • Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records using Infinite Campus as appropriate.

  • Participates as a member of the school-based crisis team.

  • Participates in faculty meetings, educational conferences, in-service opportunities, workshops, and other training seminars

  • Maintains knowledge of research, developments, and best practices in school counseling

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

  • Assist in the creation and monitor student schedules

  • Assist with recess, lunch duty and other group activity coverage

  • Works professionally with administration, staff, parents, and the community.

  • Complies with school and State Public Charter School Authority (SPCSA) policies and regulations as well as state and federal laws.

  • Abides by the ASCA Code of Ethics.

  • Work cooperatively with students, parents/guardians, peers, administration, and community members.

  • Creates and maintains 504 and behavior intervention plans.

  • Assists in the Response to Intervention (RTI) process.

  • Participates in other job-related duties and activities related to the position, as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Thorough understanding of the pedagogy and best practices of education

  • Desire to assist Secondary (6th- 12th Grade) school-aged children and ability to adapt to their developmental status and individual needs

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the proven ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-stress situations

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Creative analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Classroom or related software

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in school counseling, education psychology, or similar field

  • Nevada Teaching License with School Counselor Endorsement required

  • Prior School Counselor experience (2 years+) preferred

  • Ability to exert up to 25 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects; ability to occasionally restrain or move up to 50-100 pounds if required to intervene during student safety issues.

  • This type of work requires occasional or frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, or reaching for extended periods of time.

  • This type of work requires occasional or frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling during crisis scenarios such as hard lockdowns, earthquake drills, etc.

  • Sufficient manual dexterity and/or mobility to grasp and/or manipulate objects, operate mechanical equipment, and move about the work area.

  • Ability to operate, activate and use a computer and other office productivity machinery such as a calculator, copy machine and printer.

  • Employees in this classification may be subject to work environments that have exposure to weather or interiors with extremes of heat and/or cold, wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, high noise levels, and various work related hazards such as bloodborne pathogens or other potentially infectious materials.
