The Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department seeks a Utility Maintenance Worker I. In this position, with rotating shifts, your daily duties will include the routine cleaning, repair, inspection, vector control, disinfection, and maintenance of sanitary sewage conveyance systems (gravity and pressure).
Pima County's Regional Wastewater Reclamation Conveyance Division operates and maintains one of the largest sewer systems in the nation encompassing 3500 miles of pipes, over 78,000 manhole structures, 22 pump stations, and 28 odor control facilities. The department trains and certifies personnel in the operation of CDL-licensed vehicles, Department of Environmental Quality certifications, and multiple safety and OSHA training/certifications.(Work assignments may vary depending on the department's needs and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.)
Operates specialized equipment, machines and vehicles such as pressure cleaners,
sprayers, television inspection equipment, vacuum, balling and rodding machines;
Performs preventive maintenance and repair of sewer lines, cleanouts, manhole structures and covers and wastewater pumping system facilities;
Locates and removes blockages in sewer lines and manholes;
Clears the area around manhole covers and physically adjusts the structure and/or cover assembly;
Performs routine operational checkouts on wastewater pumping systems;
Applies and properly disposes of pesticides, disinfectants and oxidizing agents encountered in duties;
Performs operator-level servicing, adjustment and maintenance of specialized tools, equipment, assigned vehicles and machinery;
Complies with all operational safety regulations by maintaining and using safety and personal protective equipment;
Stores, handles, applies and disposes of hazardous materials generated by work assignments as instructed in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS);
Establishes and maintains appropriate worksite traffic control/warning devices and measures;
Assists other Utility Maintenance Workers in flow/atmospheric monitoring and television inspection of systems by placing and retrieving monitoring/inspection devices and equipment.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Knowledge of:
  • operation of specialized maintenance equipment and machines;
  • occupational hazards and safety procedures;
  • worksite traffic control/safety procedures;
  • application and disposal of pesticides, disinfecting and oxidizing agents;
  • mechanical principles and the use of hand tools;
  • operating principles of wastewater pumping systems;
  • operating principles of sewer inspection equipment.

Skill in:
  • identifying and reporting hazardous conditions;
  • following verbal and written instructions;
  • applying and properly disposing of pesticides and oxidizing agents;
  • operating specialized equipment and machines used in sewer maintenance and inspection;
  • performing operator-level servicing, maintenance and adjustment of equipment, machinery and assigned vehicles;
  • implementing traffic and other operational safety procedures;
  • maintaining and safely using individual safety and protective equipment;
  • using hand tools and making minor mechanical repairs;
  • reading and interpreting technical data, maps and plans;
  • assisting in the operation of wastewater pumping systems.
High school diploma or GED equivalency and six months of experience performing maintenance work in general construction or in an industrial setting.

  1. Candidate must obtain ADEQ Collection System Grade 1 Certification before the end of the initial or promotion probationary period.
  2. Candidate must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL w/ tanker endorsement) prior end of the initial or promotion probationary period.
Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum/desired qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum/desired qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidates from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.
Licenses and Certificates: All positions require possession of a valid Grade 1 Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Wastewater Collection certification upon completion of initial or promotional probation (training/preparation provided). Valid driver's license is required at the time of application. Valid AZ driver's license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant's suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services' review and approval of the candidate's driving record. Candidate must obtain Commercial Driver's License (CDL w/tanker endorsement) upon completion of initial or promotional probation (training/preparation provided).
Special Notice Items: The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history. Physical/Sensory Requirements: A post-job offer physical is required. All positions require the ability to lift up to 100 pounds for brief periods. All positions require the ability to enter and work in confined spaces, which may require the proper wearing of individual safety and protective equipment.
