Overview of Position

Seattle Public Schools utilizes teacher pools for various reasons related to recruitment. Pools provide ability for SPS to begin to engage with recruitment of teachers for vacancies we know will be identified as we approach Spring and throughout the Summer. They provide candidates the ability to begin to create their profiles and refine their application for consideration. Pools will also be utilized for hard to fill recruitment throughout the year as well as for consideration related to potential Career Fair. Expectation of application to site specific postings in the Spring and Summer months is necessary.
Please note that if you are a current contracted teacher with Seattle Public Schools, you do not need to fill out this application. You will apply directly to positions through the internal transfer application when hiring for the 2023-24 school year begins in early spring.

Under general direction of the principal, plans, organizes and administers the library media center program in assigned school; serves as consultant, teacher and resource specialist to students and school staff regarding the development and utilization of library media center resources and services to enhance and support the school's curriculum and learning environment.

Essential Functions

  • Develops and implements goals and objectives for assigned school library media center program in accordance with District policies and in cooperation with the Principal and the Library Curriculum Consultant.
  • Integrates library media center program resources and services into the school instructional program; serves on committees as required; participates in the total instructional development within the school; may provide assistance in scheduling classes, teachers and students; assists in designing and implementing staff orientation and training programs.
  • Maintains liaison between the school and Media Services Department staff; attends District Librarians' meetings; establishes contact with other libraries and resources as appropriate to meet student and staff media needs; communicates activities of the library and its goals to the school and community; prepares library media center reports as requested.
  • Surveys and analyzes school material and service needs and ensures evaluation, selection, acquisition, and processing of materials in accordance with District procedures to meet those needs and to develop a relevant and balanced materials collection; consults with Principal to develop library media center budget; expends funds in conformance with District procedures.
  • Manages circulation of library media center materials and equipment; ensures the climate in the library media center is conducive to a variety of learning experiences; schedules classes into the library media center; initiates or assists as requested in reading and research projects.
  • Instructs students and staff, individually and in groups, in the use of materials, equipment, production techniques, and library media center services.
  • Ensures the maintenance and inventory of the school's audio-visual equipment and facilitates the distribution of District audio-visual materials; may introduce and coordinate the use of new technologies as appropriate.
  • Trains and provides lead direction to clerical, paraprofessional or professional library media center staff as assigned.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
Elementary school curriculum.
Ability to:
Communicate effectively with staff, students, parents and the public in a multicultural community; develop and monitor library budget; train and provide lead direction to staff.
Desired:
Participation in a professional organization; teaching experience with students of various ability levels and backgrounds; participation in District-wide curriculum and other committees.

Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION:
Bachelor's Degree in Education with a Learning Resources endorsement or Library Media endorsement.
SUBSTITUTION:
Specialization in school librarianship resources or educational media and two years of teaching experience may substitute for the learning resources endorsement.
CERTIFICATE:
Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with Learning
Resources endorsement or Library Media endorsement.
