TEAM AND PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

The Leadership Development Team (LDT) at KIPP DC believes that outstanding schools and school communities are led, empowered and sustained by outstanding leaders. In addition to defining and clarifying the skills and competencies necessary to progress along an equitable and transparent professional trajectory, the LDT collaborates with school based and organizational leaders to find, retain, and develop exceptional leaders from a variety of backgrounds and lived experiences. The LDT provides high-quality formal and informal professional development, invaluable on the job training, meaningful projects, transformative coaching, and cohort based learning experiences for leaders across KIPP DC.

The KIPP DC Principal in Residence (PIR) program is a two-year, regionally-operated residency to prepare aspiring principals in the adaptive, technical, and managerial skills to lead a KIPP DC school.  PIR operates within a trajectory of KIPP DC Leadership Development programs. 

 

POSITION OVERVIEW:

KIPP DC seeks a Director of Leadership Development to join the Knowledge and Learning team. 

The Director of Leadership Development will lead a flagship development program, KIPP DC’s Principal in Residence program and work to implement and sustain equitable, anti-racist talent pipeline initiatives.  This role will be focused on day-to-day program management and school leader development and coaching.  This individual will also design and execute ongoing development opportunities for more experienced school leaders and other programs on the Knowledge and Learning Team.  

The Director of Leadership Development will work closely with members of the Leadership Development and Talent teams in order to support larger school leader development and selection initiatives.  This exempt role will report to the Managing Director of Knowledge and Learning. The start date for the role is flexible and will begin in late spring/early summer of school year 2023-24.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Principal-in-Residence (PIR) Program Lead

  • Design, execute and lead the PIR cohort including planning year long scope and sequence, staying up to date and informed on instructional content, shifts and initiatives at KIPP DC, delivering professional development, designing and providing feedback on PIR projects, working  with external facilitators, collaborating with school leader managers and overseeing the coaching of all cohort members.
  • Lead stakeholder engagement, annual updates, and alignment content to the KIPP DC Leadership Toolkit
  • Directly support principals who manage PIRs with Leadership Development
  • Provide direct coaching to the PIR including bi-weekly check-in
  • Hold the PIR accountable to progression on Development Roadmap of skills aligned to School Leader readiness
  • Holds the mentor school leaders accountable to coaching and assessing PIR progression on Development Roadmap of skills
  • Lead the change management effort involved in evolving the program, including: reflection, assessment, and adjustments for improvement.
  • Represent KIPP DC and its stakeholders at quarterly KIPP Foundation conferences for Directors of Leadership Development around the country (some travel required)


 

Serve as leader of the Leadership Development and Knowledge & Learning teams at KIPP DC. 

  • In collaboration with the Managing Director of Knowledge & Learning, support planning and leading team meetings, professional development, and culture building. 
  • Play integral role in the design of the Leadership Development team’s vision, long term plan and foundational structures and on the school leader selection working group including drafting policies and one-pagers and participating in pieces of the selection process design and execution
  • ​​Plan, lead and support programming for other Knowledge and Learning programs (i.e. Rising Leaders, New Deans and Coaches, Teacher Leader Academy, CTR, etc.)

Do all of the above with an equity lens, and then in addition, support the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work of the organization. 

  • Support KIPP DC’s DEI vision and regional equity agenda through Leadership Development work

 

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Post-Bachelor’s degree (ex. Masters’ or professional school equivalent) preferred
  • Minimum of ten years of work experience in education with demonstrated record of results 
  • Minimum of three years of school leadership experience with outstanding results, experience as a principal and/or principal manager preferred
  • Minimum of three years of experience coaching, mentoring and developing adults in a school setting
  • Experience leading in-person, effective professional development for adults
  • Outstanding design, project planning and program execution and evaluation skills
  • Strong ability to build relationships, navigate complicated interpersonal situations and motivate others
  • Deep commitment to racial and educational equity and the building of an organization that reflects the community KIPP DC serves; ability to hold self and others accountable for centering equity
  • Demonstrated proficiency in leading through change, executing on major initiatives, and leading cross-departmental work
  • Ability to analyze and use qualitative and quantitative data on a regular basis to drive decision-making; strong judgment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Unquestioned integrity and commitment to KIPP DC’s mission and to advancing its antiracist ambition through work with staff, students, alumni, and families
  • Advanced skills in Google Workspace products 

 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

KIPP DC offers an extremely competitive compensation and benefits package:

  • The anticipated starting salary for this position is $123,246-$152,245. At KIPP DC we strive for clarity, equity, and to be highly competitive. When determining salaries we look at benchmarks in the education and non-profit sector.  
  • KIPP DC offers a robust benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurances; various voluntary benefits; and employer paid benefits such as short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, and a membership to One Medical.
  • KIPP DC also offers a 403(b) retirement account with a 3% employer contribution and a 3% match with vesting after three years.
  • Currently, individuals in this role have up to 15 paid time off days, up to 10 paid sick days, and 12 paid holidays. This is subject to change and your exact schedule will be shared in your offer letter.
  • As a headquarters team that is focused on being responsive to our schools and meeting the needs of our students and families, we approach our work in a way that reflects these priorities. Schools operate in person and our students and families rely on us for in-person support, and this position will regularly provide on-site support to school teams, frequently partner with other headquarters teams, or regularly work in multiple locations. Because of the nature of the work, this role allows for occasional flexibility. This role will have approximately 20% flexibility to work remotely.
