The Aerospace Corporation is hiring an Undergraduate Optical Materials & Manufacturing Intern in El Segundo, CA.
The Advanced Materials Processing section of the Materials Processing Department (MPD) within the Space Materials Laboratory (SML) provides expertise and laboratory capabilities in Optical Materials, thin films, and space environmental effects on materials for advanced space systems. MPD hosts an interdisciplinary team working across materials science, optics, and engineering to design, manufacture, and test Optical Materials for space applications. We are seeking an individual with a foundation in materials science, Optical Materials, or materials processing and manufacturing to support research and technology development related to lightweight Optical Materials and structures for space applications.
Work Model:
This position will be located 100% onsite in El Segundo, CA.
What You'll Be Doing

  • Investigating optical-structural materials for advanced spacecraft applications
  • Developing characterization, testing, and analysis methods for materials and components
  • Training to operate and utilize materials processing and manufacturing equipment to evaluate material behavior
  • Participating with an interdisciplinary team in ongoing research or technical programs with academic collaboration partners
  • Applying standard techniques and procedures to carry out a series of scientific and/or engineering tasks
  • Helping to resolve design and testing issues, anomalies, challenges
  • Working with, analyzing, and presenting test data
  • Duties, responsibilities and activities may change, or new ones may be assigned as needed
  • Training and mentorship will be provided

What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:
  • Currently enrolled full-time in an accredited college/university program pursuing a bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Optics, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Availability to work full-time for approximately 10 weeks outside of university term and ability to return to a degree program full-time after completion of the internship
  • Junior class standing completed by internship start date
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Coursework in materials science and engineering
  • Prior experience in the laboratory environment and with lab safety protocols
  • Familiarity with laboratory data collection and data analysis
  • This position requires the eligibility to obtain and maintain a security clearance; which is issued by the US government. U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Coursework or hands-on laboratory experience related to optics, Optical Materials, materials processing and manufacturing
  • Experience with machining

The grade-based pay range for this job is listed below. Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.
