Summer MBA/Masters Intern, Strategic Analysis
The Strategic Analysis team within the Financial Planning & Analysis department supports many of the most important decisions made at Norfolk Southern. The Summer Analyst Intern will be engaged with a high-priority initiative adding meaningful value to Norfolk Southern. This role will focus on execution of financial / operational analyses to solve complex open-ended problems, as well as development of presentation / workshop materials to support senior leaders to make key data-driven decisions. You will work alongside cross-functional teams including Marketing, Operations, Finance, IT, Sourcing, and Law, and will learn the intricacies of the freight rail industry along the way.
Principal Duties
Collaborate with team members to structure an efficient and effective problem-solving process from initial thought to hypothesis generation / testing, and convergence on a solution
Build out financial / operational models to assess the costs, benefits, and sensitivities of business decisions
Work with stakeholders in other departments to extract data and insights to support problem-solving and analysis
Develop presentation materials to illustrate analysis output and support decision making
Example projects:
Assess operational viability and financial impact of consolidating two Intermodal terminals in the same metro area
Develop “should-cost” model to estimate the cost structure for Intermodal terminal operations vendors, supporting vendor negotiation process
Analyze relative profitability of Industrial Products customers and opportunities across a local service area, and develop optimized local service plans
Work Experience:
Minimum: 2+ years
Preferred: 3+ years
Education
Currently pursuing masters degree in Business Analytics, MBA, or other quantitative field
Minimum: Bachelor's degree
Preferred Majors: Economics, Finance, Engineering, Math, or other quantitative field
Required Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of financial modeling, including time value of money metrics (IRR, NPV, etc.)
Strong interpersonal skills and experience working in cross-functional teams
Strong MS Excel and PowerPoint skills
Basic ability to use SQL to extract, join, and manipulate data across multiple databases
Preferred Experience and Interests:
Experience executing operational and financial analyses in corporate finance, consulting, investment banking, and other similar roles
Self-motivated and organized individual contributor who executes with minimal guidance
Knowledge and intrigue for the transportation & logistics industry
Fluency in Python, R, Matlab, etc. considered an asset, but not required
Compensation
Freshman (27 or fewer credits) - $3,120/month
Sophomore (28 to 59 credits) - $3,467/month
Junior (60 to 89 credits) - $3,651/month
Senior (90 or more credits) - $3,813/month
Graduate Student - $4,680/month
*Living stipend of $425/bi-monthly is available to those who qualify.
