POSITION:
2024 Seasonal Summer Student Labor

Only two (2) positions involves work that is primarily conducted inside in an office setting. The remaining jobs involve work that is performed outside. A student applicant has the ability to indicate a preferred department(s) on the application form. A student who only identifies a preference for inside work may limit their chances of being selected for a summer position as such positions are highly competitive.

WORK DAYS/HOURS:

Monday through Friday, generally 8 hours per day; however, part-time schedules are available in most departments. Shifts may vary depending upon the assigned department.

COMPENSATION:

$15.20 per hour for entry-level students. A returning student who has worked one (1) prior summer will earn $15.70 per hour. A returning student who has worked two (2) or more prior summers will earn $16.20 per hour.

Applicants should indicate desired departments in the order of preference using numbers with “1” being the most preferred position and higher numbers being lower preferences. However, due to the large volume of applications and limited number of positions available, preferences are not guaranteed if hired. A student that is not interested in a particular department should not place a preference number in the respective box on the application form. Please indicate the days and hours you are available for a regular weekly schedule.

All Summer Student applicants must participate in an oral interview as part of the selection process. Interviews may be conducted in-person or conference call. The application form requires an applicant to select the preferred method and date(s)/time. The interview will last no longer than fifteen (15) minutes. An applicant must be available for one of the dates/times listed below.

STUDENT JOB SUMMARIES:

Listed below are brief summaries of the departments and the available positions that include, but are not limited to the following responsibilities:

Parks (4 positions, outside work): Picking up trash in City parks and parking lots, operating a weed trimmer and push mower, weeding flower beds and other landscaped areas by hand, painting (e.g., play equipment, fences) and preparing baseball fields (e.g., dragging, lining and raking).

Street DepartmentCatch Basins (2 positions, outside work): Operating an air hammer to break up concrete and asphalt pavement, shoveling dirt and concrete from catch basin areas and laying brick within catch basin structures, assisting with flagging motorists for traffic control, assisting with other street projects.

Water Treatment (2 positions, outside work): Mowing and trimming facility grounds, painting (e.g., railings, fencing, doors, pipes), cleaning work areas (e.g., mopping floors, cleaning windows), washing vehicles, cleaning water treatment holding tanks using 1½” high pressure fire hose. This position is physical in nature and involves entering confined spaces and the climbing of ladders.

Water Distribution* (4 positions, outside work): Painting fire hydrants, weeding, trimming and spraying in and around fire hydrants, participating as a general laborer as part of a work crew on water distribution projects and flagging motorists for traffic control.

Electric & Communications Departments (2 Electric, 2 Communications, outside work): Mowing grass, flagging motorists for traffic control, assembling conduit piping, painting (e.g., buildings, fencing), washing and cleaning vehicles and general cleaning in the warehouse.
Sanitation (2 positions, outside work): Collecting residential yard waste (e.g., heavy bags of grass clippings, bundles of brush, twigs and branches), painting commercial dumpsters on site, picking up trash and debris in and around the Transfer Station and washing and cleaning refuse trucks.

Vehicle Maintenance (1 Position, outside/shop work): Sweeping and cleaning the shop floors and areas, trimming bushes by hand, painting of building interior and exterior, car and trucks washing, light computer work with inventory of supplies and materials.

Information Technology (1 position, inside work): Assisting in solving day-to-day problems with City workstation computers/software and setup with new PCs for employees. Also, assisting with VoIP phones for City departments and other special I.T. related projects.

Engineering (2 positions, mixture of outside and inside work): This position will assist the Engineering Department staff in a multitude of tasks that range from data entry to surveying and construction inspection. The position requires a strong science and mathematics background with experience in Microsoft Office applications especially Microsoft Excel.

Soprema Senior Center (1 position, inside work): Assist with computer related tasks including, data entry and creating fliers. Greet seniors, answer phones, help with programs and events, including setting up, clearing and wiping tables, etc. Help with miscellaneous projects such as inventory and organizing. Requires people skills and a positive attitude.

ORIENTATION/START DATES:

All selected students must participate in an orientation session prior to beginning employment. Orientation sessions will be held virtually on the dates and times listed below. Starting dates of employment will be coordinated after orientation and drug screenings are completed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR EMPLOYMENT:

Qualified applicants must be at least 18 years old prior to your start date (department(s) with an exception are noted with an *) and possess a valid State of Ohio Motor Vehicle Operator’s License with a good driving record.

Candidates selected for the positions noted above will be required to submit to a urinalysis prior to employment to test for illegal drug use. An applicant with a positive result will not be offered employment.
