Job description

The Aerospace Corporation is the trusted partner to the nation's space programs, solving the hardest problems and providing unmatched technical expertise. As the operator of a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC), we are broadly engaged across all aspects of space- delivering innovative solutions that span satellite, launch, ground, and cyber systems for defense, civil and commercial customers. When you join our team, you'll be part of a special collection of problem solvers, thought leaders, and innovators. Join us and take your place in space.

At Aerospace, we are committed to providing an inclusive and diverse workplace for all employees to share in our common passion and aspiration - to carry out a mission much bigger than ourselves.

Job Summary

Space systems engineers are increasingly relying on interconnected digital models to define and describe their systems rather than traditional static documents. In the not-too-distant future, all systems engineers will capture and communicate system features using the Systems Modeling Language (SysML). This internship offers the perfect opportunity to gain experience in holistic space Systems Engineering using emergent Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methods and SysML tools. The intern selected for this position will be trained in MBSE, concept design, concurrent engineering, and SysML. After this, they will be given modeling tasks that support concept development of space systems for various organizations such NASA, NOAA, and DoD.

Work Model:

This position will be a hybrid work model and offer partially remote with some onsite work required in Chantilly, VA or El Segundo, CA

What You'll Be Doing

One of the key capabilities of our MBSE Office is the Concept Design Center (CDC), which is an internationally recognized center of excellence in collaborative, concurrent design of space and ground systems that draws on technical experts from across Aerospace (see our CDC video at https://aerospace.org/video/concept-design-center). As a team member of the MBSE Office, you will help create and operate the computer models in the CDC that we use to represent spacecraft systems, perform spacecraft concept design, and analyze behavior. Specific functions will be to:

  • Develop SysML models of space systems that will provide engineers and government customers insight into the system structure, behavior and requirements.
  • Work with experienced subject matter experts to develop and operate the spreadsheet tools used in the Concept Design Center (CDC) to estimate the size, mass, power, performance, and cost of future spacecraft. Our Summer interns performed contributed to a customer funded concept design and in-depth analysis study to Improve Wildfire Detection and Monitoring Capabilities using space-based assets (see the Project Wildfire concept design study video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4BCKgMoOt8c ).
  • Work with a team to develop a digital twin prototype of a physical "SpinSat" system to support a training class for Aerospace employees. The digital twin will predict behavior of a classroom "satellite" and will evolve its models based on live telemetry provided by the physical system.
  • Help integrate analytical models (like simulators or design estimators) with descriptive models (like SysML models containing requirements and risks).

What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements

  • Currently enrolled fulltime in an accredited College or University majoring in relevant engineering discipline (Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Data Engineering, etc.).
  • Availability to work full-time for a minimum of 10 weeks outside of university term and ability to return to a degree program full-time after completion of the internship.
  • Undergraduate degree completed by internship start date
  • Ability to obtain a top-secret security clearance which is issued by the U.S. government. Although a security clearance is not required for the intern position, if full time position were offered then clearability would be required. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
  • Experience with computer modeling and simulation tools such as Matlab, Simulink, SolidWorks, Excel, Visual Basic, Cameo, MagicDraw, Sparx EA, etc. Applicants will not be familiar with all M&S tools, but a willingness to learn new tools and languages is essential.
  • Must be a self-starter and team player who can spearhead new assignments with fellow employees
  • Transcripts Required for this position

How You Can Stand Out

It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:

  • GPAof3.5 or higherin undergrad program at a university or college
  • Minoring or dual majoring in another relevant discipline (e.g., Comp Sci)
  • Knowledge of spacecraft systems and related topics. Astrodynamics, spacecraft solar arrays, propulsion subsystems, and reaction wheels. If you are familiar with these topics, then you probably have the knowledge that we want.
  • Experience with SysML and MBSE tools (such as MagicDraw, Cameo Systems Modeler, or Sparx EA). The tasks you will be assigned will involve SysML modeling, so having a head start is a plus.
  • Experience with data management, data engineering, and/or data exchange between different software tools (APIs, XML, databases, cloud services, AWS, Kubernetes, etc.)
  • Team project experience designing, building and operating mechanical systems, especially aerospace systems
  • Leadership experience. The intern team working on the CDC project will need a leader. You may be that leader.
