Human Factors Internship Overview

Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie Interns.

 

The AbbVie Human Factors (HF) team supports AbbVie's mission by putting patients at the front and center of everything we do. The team supports development of combination products and medical devices by using research and usability testing to ensure that patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers can safely and effectively use the devices to take their medicines. The team includes experts in psychology, ergonomics, engineering, and user experience design and is a critical part of the research and development process.

 

Key responsibilities include:

       Review previous research and relevant standards.

       Develop a UI specification for a combination product.

       Develop draft guidance that lists considerations when generating user interface requirements.

       Present the outcome of their internship to Combination Product Development stakeholders.

       Participate and assist in HF activities for on-going projects as project timelines permit.

 

Minimum Qualifications 

       Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a Master's degree or PhD in Human Factors, Biomedical Engineering, Cognitive Science/Psychology, Industrial Engineering, or other related field.

       Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship.

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Expected graduation date between December 2024 - July 2025.
  • Completed courses in medical device Human Factors and product design.
  • Experience with design projects that involved generating product requirements.
  • Exposure to medical device Human Factors standards, e.g., FDA guidance on Human Factors, IEC 62366-1 and IEC 62366-2.
