Building and Land Technology (BLT) is now hiring seasonal Dockhands for the 2024 season!

The Dockhand is responsible for assisting the marina team and candidates must be highly service-oriented. Dockhands are responsible for performing a variety of tasks including but not limited to general operation of the marina(s) by assisting seasonal boaters, Harbor Point tenants, community visitors and transient guests.  The Dockhand must work to maintain a safe and clean environment throughout the marina and the Harbor Point waterfront community. The Dockhand will assist in multiple areas as needed and must be comfortable working safely around water. This is a minimum wage position ($15.69) that is both part time and seasonal. 

Responsibilities and Duties of the Dockhand:

  • Provide Harbor Point Marina (HPM) guests and boaters with exceptional service by creating the best experience possible
  • Greeting all visitors, guests, and tenants with exceptional care in a courteous and kind manner
  • Provide five-star country club customer service, including answering questions regarding local knowledge and information
  • Maintain and project a high level of professionalism, personal care, and positive image to the public
  • Assist the Marina Manager with all marina services offered, including quality control procedures, guest services, Transient reservations and “Dock and Dine” services 
  • Assist all guests and visitors with general needs, throughout the Harbor Point community  
  • Maintain and clean Dock Master Office, windows, gardens, boardwalks, docks, walkways, restrooms, surrounding property and other areas designated by management 
  • Ensure all marinas, work boat, water taxi and equipment are always operational 
  • Comply with OSHA regulations, environmental regulations, and adhere to all site rules and company policies and expectations 
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by Marina Manager, Dock Master, Engineering, or Upper Management 
  • Provide support for Marina and Management team
  • Document and notify management of all security-related incidents

Requirements of the Dockhand:

  • Perform routine/daily tasks to meet established quality standards for all Marina-related operations including cleaning, maintenance, parking areas, weeding, removing trash and debris.
  • Proficient swimmer with basic knowledge of boating/boat handling skills
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends (mandatory), holidays (mandatory), and extended hours (if needed) to support all marinas/event/park programs
  • Essential skills: strong communication skills, answering phones, computer basics, Word/Excel is a plus, math, filing, administration skills, VHF radio etiquette and boating safety  
  • Previous customer service experience preferred 
  • Must demonstrate a positive attitude combined with the ability to communicate fluently and relate well with customers in a fast-paced environment  
  • Adapt quickly and efficiently to changing priorities to meet team member / guest needs 
  • Must effectively work independently, and manage and motivate team 
  • Ability to walk, bend, stoop, climb and work safely around water, on a ladder or in confined spaces 
  • Possess and display a proactive, professional, honest, trustworthy, and strong work ethic  
  • Adhere to all company policies 

Education/Experience Required for the Dockhand position

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent preferred (Not required if currently a rising Junior or Senior) 
  • 1 - 3 years of related boating experience preferred (will train the right candidate) 
  • Ability to work safely around the water
  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license 
  • CT state boating license a plus, not required, can obtain on approval of employment 
  • Must be physically fit, able to lift at least 40 lbs., work standing for multiple hours (6+) and work in all types of weather 
  • CPR/First Aid Certification a plus, not required
