About KIPP NYC:
KIPP NYC Public Schools is a non-profit network of 18 free, public charter schools in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan. We partner with families and communities to create joyful and rigorous schools in pursuit of a more just world. In 1995 we started our first middle school, KIPP Academy, in the Bronx, with a vision that every child grows up free to create the future they want for themselves and their communities. Today, our network consists of eight Elementary Schools, nine middle schools, one high school, and KIPP Forward, a comprehensive program to support our students and alumni in choosing and preparing for the educational and career paths that fit their goals and sense of purpose. KIPP NYC currently serves more than 11,000 students and alumni, has a staff of more than 1,000 (11 % of whom are alumni), and continues to grow!
Job Description
Position Overview
The Principal is responsible for the overall administration and management of a KIPP NYC School, including academic programs, school vision, school design, staffing, and culture development. Areas of responsibility include planning and evaluation, policy development and administration, personnel and fiscal management, and parent and community relations. This full-time position reports to a KIPP NYC Managing Director of Schools and/or a KIPP NYC Deputy Superintendent.
Responsibilities:
(1) Student Achievement
  • Set standards for student growth and achievement; monitor progress of all students
  • Work with the school leadership team to continually analyze data, assess and evaluate teacher performance to ensure ambitious gains in student achievement
  • Work with parents to achieve maximum involvement in support of student performance and success
  • Ensure school programing focuses on continuous improvement and ensures the achievement of all students

(2) Instructional Leadership
  • Manage the school leadership team, which includes: assistant principals, deans, directors and other school leadership staff
  • With the leadership team, regularly and consistently manage and evaluate the teaching team
  • Provide instructional leadership to advance proven teaching and learning practices
  • Observe classes and provide feedback regularly
  • Lead data-driven discussions about student performance
  • Supervise and mentor teachers in collaboration with instructional leadership
  • Design professional development plans and programming for individual teachers to address deficits, build on strengths, and become more effective, more successful team members

(3) School Culture and Personnel
  • Create a high performing team responsible for attaining school goals and committed to achieving excellence
  • Lead teachers and school staff in developing a school culture and family relationships that promote the school's mission and values
  • Develop leadership team and leadership capacity to support school success
  • Continually monitor progress across all measures of school and staff performance
  • Recruit, select, and hire all school staff, including teachers and school-based support staff

(4) School Management and Administration
  • Develop organizational goals and objectives consistent with the mission and vision of KIPP NYC
  • Oversee all programs, services, and activities to ensure that program objectives are met
  • Ensure compliance with full scope of government regulatory requirements
  • Manage student recruitment and enrollment process
  • Ensure a safe and orderly environment
  • Work with the shared services team staff and other school leaders to optimize school operations

(5) Fiscal Responsibility
  • Develop, manage and implement school budget in collaboration with the Managing Director, the Managing Director of Finance and the school leadership team
  • Ensure compliance with KIPP NYC, New York State, and KIPP Network fiscal policies and requirements.

(6) KIPP NYC Leadership
  • As a team member, work with the KIPP NYC School Leadership Team to maximize the effectiveness of all KIPP NYC programs

Qualifications:
  • Previous school leadership experience as a principal, assistant principal, or dean
  • Demonstrated success in raising the achievement levels of students within our KIPP NYC communities
  • Demonstrated success developing academic programs and academic culture
  • A passion for being part of a team-oriented, mission-driven school culture
  • Demonstrated success managing staff through planning, motivating, rewarding, and providing targeted feedback and professional development
  • Extreme flexibility to accommodate multiple priorities and a strong work ethic to accommodate a high level of responsibilities
  • Articulate, professional demeanor with strong self-confidence and initiative
  • Strong interpersonal skills that contribute to a collegial working environment and a healthy measure of the character traits we value: zest, grit, hope, love, social intelligence, gratitude and a sense of humor.

Additional Information
Compensation & Benefits:
KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary ranging from $160,742 to $225,232 per year. Salary ranges at KIPP NYC are standardized based on role level and role function. Individual salaries are determined through a lens of equity, accounting for years of experience relevant to the role and scope of responsibilities, and are benchmarked against others within the same salary band. Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range, however they are ultimately determined by scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.
