Job description

The Role:
This position is an exciting opportunity to work with a Ph.D.-level computational biologist to assist in the development of data analysis pipelines for next-generation sequencing (NGS) data. This supports a wide variety of departments and the advancement of Moderna's mRNA therapeutics platform. This co-op takes place from July - December, 2023 and candidates must be available for the duration.
Candidates strong in Biology and Computer Science are encouraged to apply. Knowledge of Python, R, NGS, cloud computing (especially Amazon Web Services), and Docker is preferred, but some can be learned after starting. These are critical skills for success in any data science / programming job.
Here's What You'll Do:
  • Assist in development and improvement of cloud-based data analysis pipelines and workflows
  • Specifically, you will work with a Bioinformatics Scientist to
    • improve efficiency and scalability
    • make interfaces and reports more intuitive and useful to end users
    • add processing steps
    • benchmark open-source analysis software
  • Attend meetings with data creators and experiment designers to better understand end-user needs
  • Meet with your mentor weekly or daily for guidance and collaboration
  • Present at least once to the Bioinformatics team

Here's What You'll Bring to the Table:
  • Minimum GPA of 3.4
  • Currently enrolled undergraduate senior, Masters student, or PhD student
  • Course of Study: Biology, Bioinformatics or similar; Computer Science or similar
  • Some experience in both Biology and Computer Science preferred
  • 1+ classes or work experience using Python
  • Previous co-op or intern experience preferred
  • Must be curious, eager, open to learning, and independent
