Department: Student ServicesProgram: School HealthReports to: Program Supervisor Classification/Range: Licensed, RepresentedSchedule: On-Call MESD School Health Services:A critical link between health and education. Over 135 MESD employees work in the Department of School Health Services. We are committed to ensuring the safety of students by providing the highest standard of nursing care in the school and community setting so that every student has the opportunity to achieve their educational potential.

We are nurses, care coordinators, health educators, health assistants, administrative staff, outreach workers, screening and prevention specialists who accomplish this by providing and coordinating specialized health services that support the educational experience for students throughout Multnomah and Clackamas County. We are committed to employee and community wellness, advocacy on behalf of students and their families, collaboration with community health systems and school based health centers, research and development to improve population health in schools, and using evidenced-based practice in the delivery of care. We support the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model that combines and builds on elements of the traditional coordinated school health approach by responding to the call for greater alignment, integration, and collaboration between education and health to improve each child's cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development.

POSITION PURPOSE: To provide direct nursing services that facilitate the school experience for students in all local district schools with special health needs. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Facilitate health services for identified students by:Developing a Student Health Management Plan (SHMP)Providing a summary of health information including recommendations for the school program which includes a nursing care plan, emergency plans, delegation or assignment to school staff, transportation plans, and IEP goals. This may include teaching classroom staff to observe and report signs of identified concern to the R.N.

in collaboration with the Registered Nurse Specialist for Students With Complex Chronic Health Problems.Observing and assessing student condition needs continuously.Re-evaluating student health status, identified health concerns, goals, and placement to determine if progress has been made and health information is current.Consulting with health care providers/parents to modify medical treatment and nursing management as needed in consultation with the Registered Nurse Specialist for Students with Complex Chronic Health Problems.Act as liaison between parents, teachers, community agencies, and medical providers as needed, to ensure effective communicationMake recommendations regarding the nature, scope, and intensity of services that will provide a safe school environment in the least restrictive environment for students in assigned districts.Participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team and make appropriate recommendations regarding student health/educational plans for IEP/IFSP in collaboration with the Registered Nurse Specialist for Students with Complex Chronic Health Problems.Demonstrate commitment to maintain competencies for professional practice.Contribute to a positive and productive work environment.To consult with supervisor for assistance and/or direction as needed.To perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Director/Supervisor ESSENTIAL QUALITIES:Equity: Lead and support regional equity initiativesVision: Lead with vision, follow-through and student focus. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, ABILITIES: Daily and consistent attendance and punctualityBasic knowledge of applicable laws and nursing practice regulations and standards.Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication skills.Demonstrates organization, leadership, and time management skills.Valid driver's license and vehicle available for use on the job.Ability to become proficient navigating in internal and external data systems, including data entry and report production pertinent to delivery of school health services.Ability to physically perform assigned duties.Ability to multi-task and work independently with high degree of accuracy, efficiency and attention to detail.Willingness to work a flexible schedule.Current certification in CPR.DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, ABILITIES: Experience in an educational/school settingBilingual in Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian or Somali EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:Valid Oregon license to practice as a Registered Nurse.Experience in the use of computer systems.Preferred BSN/BS in a health-related field.Current certification in CPR.Any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job WORKING CONDITIONS:Work is performed primarily on a school campus, indoors within an office, gymnasium, cafeteria or classroom with infrequent responses outdoors for urgent care or monitoring for environmental safety risks or conducting wellness activities.

Involves sitting, walking and occasional lifting up to 40 pounds. Requires the use of computers, office equipment and driving personal vehicle. Visitation to homes and offices of health care or social service providers as well as attendance at evening and weekend activities may be necessary.

May work with high stress student, family, or personnel situations. This position is subject to board policies, administrative rules and procedures, department regulations and applicable state and federal statutes. This position does not carry administrative authority.
