Stellar Farmers Markets Head Culinary Educator (DOHMH)

Part-time, Temporary (May 22nd through December 1st)

The Fund for Public Health in New York City, (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers.To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.

Program Overview

The Healthy Eating Unit within the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's (DOHMH) Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention is seeking1 part-time, temporary, Head Culinary Educator to support and implement Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables Stellar Farmers Markets (SFM), a program funded by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) via a contract with New York State Health Department. SFM provides nutrition education and food workshops to the public at farmers markets that serve New Yorkers with low incomes. The goal of SFM is to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables by building on New Yorkers' knowledge and skills about healthy eating.

This position will be housed within the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention (BCDP) which strives to reduce the burden of chronic disease, including heart disease, obesity, and cancer, among New Yorkers. We work to address the impact of structural racism and other injustices that are a root cause of the inequitable prevalence, treatment and outcomes of chronic diseases in communities of color and among other marginalized communities. BCDP focuses on nutrition, tobacco use, the built environment, screening for cancer, and reducing the incidence and impact of hypertension. BCDP works with partners in government and the community to employ evidence-based policies, programs, communications and research aimed at shifting environments, changing systems and promoting health equity. The Bureau sits within the Center for Health Equity and Community Wellness.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Head Culinary Educator will report directly to the Farmers Market Nutrition Education Program Manager and will assist the JSY Nutrition Projects Coordinator with planning and implementation of SFM including training and supporting seasonal Culinary Educators, preparing for and conducting bi-monthly educator meetings and implementing in-person workshops at one market site. This role may also implement workshops virtually, as needed. This paid position is temporary, part-time, 3-4 days per week, starting late-May through early December. From late-May through June a bulk of time worked will be at the DOHMH office in Long Island City, Queens. Starting in July approximately one day will be worked at the office and the other days and locations will depend upon and coincide with market schedules and/or the virtual workshop schedule.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist coordinator with preparing for and conducting educator training, including preparing for and leading a full day of culinary training and preparing for and conducting culinary training demonstrations
  • Assist coordinator during program implementation, including attending weekly educator meetings, planning and conducting bi-monthly Culinary Educator meetings, purchasing ingredients and preparing for recipe tastings and practice demonstrations
  • Draft and send weekly communications to educators; troubleshoot educator needs, as applicable; and conduct site visits to ensure programming is being conducted according to established protocols
  • Conduct SFM culinary demonstrations, virtually or at farmers markets, as needed
  • Assist coordinator with additional program activities (including recipe and program revisions and updates) and work on special projects, as needed
  • Maintain and ensure that all safety protocols are being followed.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:        

  •  Bachelor's degree
  • Culinary training and 1 year of professional culinary experience or 2+ years culinary experience.
  • 1 year of experience conducting culinary demonstrations or cooking classes in multi-cultural settings with diverse populations
  • Excellent written, communication, and organizational skills
  • Dynamic personality and excellent presentation skills and experience, in particular delivering virtual culinary workshops
  • Ability handle multiple tasks and work independently
  • Willing and able to stand for long periods of time and work outside in inclement weather conditions
  • Willing and able to regularly lift and transport items weighing up to 25 pounds
  • ServSafe certification or successful completion of the NYC Food Protection course (prior to June 12th, 2022)
  • Commitment to a minimum of 3 days per week of work (Mondays are required) 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Strong preference will be given to applicants who are fluent in Spanish.
  • Experience working with a team in a leadership role
  • Knowledgeable about farmers markets, regional food systems and community food security issues in NYC
  • Understanding of and experience with regional food systems and food security issues and the underlying causes of health inequities in NYC communities
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office software

COMPENSATION

The part-time position will be hired through a staffing agency at a pay rate of $28 per hour from May 22nd through December 1st.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This is not a remote job. Most, if not all, responsibilities require onsite or in office work.

This position will be hired through a staffing agency.

This position will require onsite work at farmers markets across NYC to conduct nutrition education workshops and trainings and weekly Monday morning meetings at the NYC Health Department office in Long Island City, Queens.
