Job description

General Purpose of Position:

To build young disciples for Christ by developing and implementing a comprehensive approach to student ministry (in the areas of group building, worship, discipleship, mission, and outreach) while serving as a spiritual leader and role model.

Organizational Relationship and Supervision:

The Minister of Students reports to the Senior Pastor for spiritual and ministry guidance. The Senior Pastor, in cooperation with the Staff Parish Relations Committee, provides an annual evaluation of the Minister of student’s performance.

The Primary Task:

There shall be a comprehensive approach to the development and implementation of the student ministry at all levels in the connectional system of Saint John UMC. This comprehensive approach is based on the understanding of the Mission statement of student Ministries:

“Ignite Student Ministries exists to partner with students and their families, love them with the Gospel, ignite an authentic relationship with Christ, encourage students to be the light of the world, and equip students’ to live out their faith based on scripture, prayer, and Christian community.”

Responsibilities:

Overall Ministry:

1. Plan, develop, and implement all aspects of a balanced student ministry in group building, worship, discipleship, mission, and outreach.

2. Provide Pastoral Ministry to the student ministry families (youth, parents of youth and volunteer leaders) and coordinate the training of others to do likewise.

3. Coordinate and implement an annual student ministry budget proposal and administer it as approved by the Budget/Finance Committee.

4. Coordinate the planning to ensure students experience personal worship and praise through preaching and music activities.

5. Network with other United Methodist Church ministers and spiritual organizations for youth in our community to support youth integration and unity.

6. Share the gospel with lost youth/students and lost parents on an ongoing basis, both individually and cooperatively.

7. Create and implement an overall youth evangelism strategy for the church.

8. Mentor youth in developing their leadership skills.

9. Ensure that the Child Protection Policy (Safe Sanctuaries) is observed in all Student ministry settings.

Weekly Ministry:

1. Coordinate the weekly student ministry programming (Sunday and Wednesday).

2. Coordinate an overall youth curriculum plan for the church for a balanced comprehensive Christian education to students.

3. Keep records of youth participation.

4. Be available to students in numerous ways (i.e., attendance at extracurricular activities, visitation, times of crisis, etc.)

Yearly Ministry:

1. Help with student leadership by providing opportunities for youth to be directly involved in missions and ministry – both locally and outside the community.

2. Plan, develop, and lead youth trips throughout the year including but not limited to (Summer mission trips, holiday world, winter retreat, etc.)

3. Work to effectively reach youth in the community and develop a strategic student ministry outreach plan.

4. Support and guide the student leadership team in an annual process of evaluating the vision and goals of the student ministries and directing four planning sessions throughout the year.

Volunteers Ministry:

1. Coordinate the enlisting, training, and motivation of adults to serve in student ministry.

2. Recruit and train volunteers who work with students in all aspects of student ministry and ensure adequate volunteer support and adult to youth ratios.

Parent Ministry:

1. Ensure prompt communication with church staff and leadership, parents, and congregation effectively using all available resources (email, website, bulletin, newsletter, bulletin board, etc.).

2. Create events for parents and youth to create opportunities for discussion, relationship building, and parenting goals.

Church Ministry:

1. Be aware of resources for developing the student ministry programming and take part in continuing education events and training opportunities.

2. Be a liaison between the church and other community organizations, people, and resources that relate to students and student ministries.

3. Work in concert with the gifts and talents of other staff members and maintain a teamwork attitude at all church-wide functions.

4. Be an advocate for youth and educate the congregation about the hopes, concerns, and needs of youth in the local church and community.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 20 – 35 per week
