Summary: The Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy ("Academy") is the programmatic arm of Washington Nationals Philanthropies. The Academy is a year-round educational and athletic facility with a mission of using baseball and softball as vehicles to foster positive character development, academic achievement, and improved health among at-risk Washington, D.C., youth. We are looking for an After-School Academy Classroom Coordinator to manage and optimize the various systems needed to execute this vision. The Classroom Coordinator will begin working in January 2023. The After-School Academy Classroom Coordinator will be responsible for effectively planning and implementing daily logistics (including tracking and reporting daily Scholar-Athlete attendance), provide support and oversight during mentoring time, be the lead facilitator during study hall/homework help time activities, develop thorough and creative alternative instructional plans for scholar-athletes that arrive without homework, other activities related to academics, baseball/softball, Team Time, and other activities, as requested. The After-School Academy Classroom Coordinator will oversee and manage college/high school-aged volunteers, meal time, and provide necessary support during all enrichment activities (e.g. mentoring, electives, etc.) associated with the Academy's after-school program. The After-School Classroom Coordinator should be well-versed in youth development and able to mentor volunteer coaches. Lastly, the After-School Classroom Coordinator must have the ability to manage behavioral challenges posed by scholar-athletes by using Advancing Youth Development and Responsive Classrooms practices. The After-School Classroom Coordinator is expected to be at the Academy for after-school programming during the hours of 2:30pm to 7:30pm and will attend all Academy field-trips, as requested. The After-School Classroom Coordinator will also be expected to attend a variety of evening and weekend activities, as well as mandatory training and professional development programs provided by the Academy. Key Responsibilities: Program Operations & Support
- Take a lead role during classroom instruction, mentoring time, meal time, gathering time/Team Time, field trips, and rainy day/cold weather activities.
- Maintain an organized classroom setting, support oversight of transition from classrooms to the field for scholar-athletes and other learning activities.
- Manage volunteers and coaches with respect to instructional/academic activities.
- Participate in and provide effective oversight of scholar-athletes during field-trips and to and from the Academy.
- Coordinate with the appropriate After-School Academy Baseball/Softball Coordinator and other program staff for daily logistics and lesson plans.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Ability to manage the classroom setting and provide support for assignments and lessons in STEM (science, technology, engineering and/or math) for students in grades three through eight
- Commitment to working with youth and families in a low-income, urban community; belief that all students can achieve at high levels
- Commitment to achieving the articulated objectives of the Academy for scholar-athletes, staff, and the community at-large
- Demonstrated leadership and motivational skills
- At the Academy during the hours of 2:30pm to 7:30pm on Monday-Thursday during the school year. Time may vary due to special events that may require this person to be present (e.g. fundraising events, field trips, retreats, etc.)
- High school diploma or equivalent with 2+ years of relevant experience in youth-based sports or academic activities
- 1+ years of relevant youth development experience
- College degree preferred
- Field: The After-School Academy Classroom Coordinator will be subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and will be exposed to inclement weather of varying degrees. The After-School Academy Classroom Coordinator will function in a high activity sports venue. In addition, the After-School Academy Classroom Coordinator is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, run, jump, and climb up/down stairs.
