Overview

We have multiple exciting opportunities for Operations Technicians of all levels to join our organization. 

 

Our Operations Technicians monitor and maintain our highly technical water treatment and distribution process.  They make routine decisions concerning process chemistry, chemical dosage, mechanical equipment operations and distribution system operation; balance flows to basins and reservoirs and maintain system water storage requirements. Our Operations Technicians endeavor to meet or exceed all state and federal water quality standards and regulations; meet or exceed Board policies, goals and expectations; and promote security of WaterOne's water system.   They are also responsible for promoting safety, environmental stewardship and cost efficiency.

 

**Please note: We are looking for candidates with various levels of experience and expertise.  The schedules for positions will likely be weeknight or weekend night shifts.

Pay Range:  From $21.20/hr

 

Responsibilities
  • With minimum oversight, responsible for the daily operation of a highly technical water treatment and distribution process. Makes routine decisions concerning chemical dosage, pump selection.  Balances flows to basins and reservoirs and maintains system water storage requirements.  Must be able to communicate effectively as well as follow written and oral instructions.
  • Operates SCADA and PC based computer systems. Prepares computer-generated reports for management.  Calculates flows, chemical dosages and chemical solutions.  Monitors and responds to all aspects of water quality prior to distribution.  Maintains pressures, flows, and reservoirs in the distribution system.  Responsible for the accurate entry of operational data and reports.
  • Trouble shoots problems with chemical treatment, complex instrumentation, mechanical equipment, and microprocessor-based controllers; generates work orders when necessary.
  • Responsible for safe utilization of hazardous chemicals and gases. Demonstrates proper use of and use proper safety equipment, including respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and participates in required safety training.  Correctly wears personal protective equipment for appropriate situations.
  • Operates complex High Voltage electrical equipment and high-pressure systems.
  • Performs routine process chemical laboratory analyses. Operates and trouble shoots complex chemical analyzers.
  • Maintains production laboratory. Responsible for laboratory quality control and assures accurate result reporting.
  • Assists in the installation, calibration, startup and training of new processes and equipment. 
  • Work Hours: weeknights either 7pm-5am or 9pm-7am
  • Will be required to work extended hours as needed.
  • Performs routine maintenance and clean up.
  • Performs all duties pertaining to hazardous waste operation in accordance with all applicable requirements.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.
  • Chemical Feed Systems:
    • Change settings on all chemical feeders at all locations.
    • Change chlorine tanks.
    • Operate all chemical feed systems including flushing, checking and ensure proper operation.
    • Record all chemical dosages changes in the database.
  • Control Room Operation:
    • Navigate to all pumping stations, tanks and facilities on the SCADA screens.
    • Acknowledge alarms.
    • Start and stop pumps and find dialogue boxes.
    • Properly answer the phone.
  • Laboratory Testing:
    • Perform basic tests: alkalinity, chlorine, hardness, pH, conductivity, turbidity, solids, CT, ammonia, fluoride.
    • Perform proper sample collection.
  • Analyzers:
    • Read and navigate analyzer displays.
    • Flush and perform basic maintenance of analyzer equipment.
  • Treatment Process:
    • Wash filters.
    • Locate all pump stations.
    • Properly collect samples.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • The Technician must be in possession of a valid Class I Kansas Water Supply System Operator Certificate within eighteen months of employment.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and continuously meet WaterOne driving standards.
  • Ability to utilize software systems such as Word, Excel, Access, Internet, and Email programs.
  • Ability to enter operational data at a basic level.
  • Requires the ability to comprehend and learn the use of PLC based microprocessors.
  • Requires knowledge of hazardous chemicals handling and qualify as a Hazardous Materials Technician capable of emergency response within one year of employment.
  • Requires the ability to comprehend and learn to trouble shoot and calibrate chemical feed machines.
  • Requires the ability to read and interpret technical operations manuals.
  • Requires the ability to work with and as part of a team of skilled employees.
  • Requires the ability to make decisions under high stress situations and to continuously show good judgment in routine decisions
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively, orally and written.
  • Must have experience with or the ability to learn and apply all applicable requirements pertaining to hazardous waste operations.
  • Must be able to pass post offer medical exam, including drug screen and background verification (may not apply to current employees).

 

Preferred Education, Skills & Experience  

  • California State University, Sacramento Water Treatment Courses Volume 1 and Volume 2; Or 20 credit hours of Water Technical School; Or 20 credit hours of college courses in the following areas: math, hydraulics, chemistry, plumbing, PLC, microprocessors, physics, biology, and laboratory.
  • At least 1 year of water treatment experience preferred.
  • Mechanical operating abilities & basic plumbing skills.
  • The ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics.

The employee must be in possession of a licenses and be able to operate a vehicle at any given time. The employee must be able to occasionally position self to inspect, view or perform analytical processes and techniques. The employee must be able to climb ladders and work at heights. The employee must be able to distinguish colors. The employee must be able to meet qualifications for using air purifying and air supplied respiratory protection.
