MAINTENANCE MECHANIC
WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT
AFSCME LABOR GRADE: 3, 4 or 5 (depending on qualifications)
M-F 6:00 AM-2:00 PM
SUMMARY: Under general supervision, maintains and repairs wastewater treatment plant equipment and structures, under the direction of the Director, Chemist and Chief Maintenance Mechanic; performs other duties as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (which are not in any hierarchical order)
- Executes preventative maintenance schedules for all wastewater plant equipment and buildings.
- Maintains maintenance records for each unit as to the lubrication schedules and repairs made.
- Analyzes difficulties and determines causes of electrical and mechanical problems and corrects.
- Repairs equipment by repacking pumps, replacing bearings, replacing universal joints, replacing cables, removing and repairing small motors, removing and replacing large motors, pulling and replacing pumps, replacing fuses, coils, relays, etc., repairing and replacing steel framework and structure equipment, etc.
- Troubleshoots electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic or structural equipment failures to determine the cause and develop course of action to resolve situation.
- Repairs structures by fixing windows, doors, masonry, and concrete and similar maintenance tasks.
- Utilizes and wears proper protective safety gear and equipment.
- Fills in for wastewater personnel (operators) and abides by schedule and shift changes as necessary.
- Operates filter press as necessary.
- Ensures routine maintenance, lubricating, and cleaning is completed on wastewater plant equipment, including, proper operation of belts, chains, motors, gearboxes, controls, etc.
- Operates city-owned vehicles, including trucks and backhoes.
- Operates various power tools and hand tools.
- Maintains the designated work area in the wastewater department to keep clean and orderly.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
Knowledge of plant processes, flow patterns, controls, and the operation of all treatment equipment.
Knowledge of OSHA regulations, EPA regulations, and safe work practices.
Knowledge of electrical codes, OEM Manuals and reference books.
Knowledge of the function of hand and power tools.
Ability to ensure safe work environment.
Ability to work in a confined space.
Ability to safely handle various process chemicals, recognizes potential hazards, and employs proper procedures and safety equipment.
Ability to react quickly and make independent decisions regarding various operating conditions.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to work in inclement weather conditions.
Ability to work alone and multiple shifts as required.
Ability to effectively communicate with those contacted throughout the course of the workday.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other departments, agencies, employees, supervisors and the public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: There is frequent need to stand, walk and climb; there is need to sit, twist, bend, stoop, talk or hear, use hands to fingers, lift up to and over fifty (50) pounds, and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday. Works closely with hazardous chemicals and materials, mechanical parts, and slow-moving equipment. Position is subject to climbing ladders, overtime and emergency call out. Personnel must be able to work in inclement weather and either alone or with someone. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The equivalent of a High School Diploma; possession of valid commercial driver's license (CDL), or the ability to obtain it within a 3-month time period; previous experience or course work in water or wastewater treatment maintenance is desired or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
