This position is based in Orlando, FL working along volunteers at our Main Distribution Center.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida is a member of Feeding America - the largest charitable domestic hunger-relief organization in the United States. SHFBCF secures and distributes food and grocery products to approximately 550 local nonprofit feeding programs throughout Central Florida. Last year, with the help of food and financial donors, volunteers and a caring, committed community, the food bank has distributed enough food for 76 million meals to partner programs such as food pantries, soup kitchens, women's shelters, senior centers, day care centers and Kids Cafes. In addition, Second Harvest's 16-week culinary training program teaches foodservice-based technical, life and employability skills to economically hard-pressed adults. Department Overview
The Operations team at Second Harvest plays a key role in our day to day functions. The Operations team at Second Harvest plays a key role in our day to day functions. This includes tasks handling major and minor warehouse operations such as inspection, procurement, acceptance, put-away to picking, packing, order assembly and shipping/receiving. We also lead hundreds of volunteers that donate their time to help us sort and repack product to be distributed to our partner agencies.
Work Hours
Tuesday- Saturday: 7:30AM - 4:00PM; some nights and weekends required
Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Operations Manager, this position leads and coordinates activities of volunteers engaged in the reclamation of donated products and assist in keeping records of the product handled. The person in this role ensures that volunteers follow procedures according to our Safe Food Handling Guidelines and that the environment provides a favorable experience for them and promotes the mission of the organization.
Job Responsibilities
- Performs the daily activities involving in the receipt, inspection, cleaning/sanitizing, lining boxes, labeling, recording counts of boxes, packing categorizing, weighing and movement of damaged products received from local and Second Harvest donors.
- Monitor adherence to procedures, retrains, or works with Operations Manager to take the necessary corrective action on any mislabeled product.
- Direct the movement of Perishable and Non Perishable food items into the isolation area for sorting.
- Perform and oversee the sorting and inspection of products using blue light and visual inspection to ascertain contamination, infestation, expiration or spoilage
- Accepts or rejects products based on inspection to insure Second Harvest requirements are met.
- Perform quality control functions, including random audits, retrain volunteers as appropriate, and performs final check of boxes before product leaves the sorting area for mislabeling, breakage, expiration or contamination.
- Sets up and maintains sorting area layout design to maximize space in both dry and cooled areas.
- Establish appropriate labeling to properly store and locate product; track product levels with Inventory Control Manager.
- Work with Director of Volunteers to coordinate volunteer scheduling, avoid conflicts and maximize efficiency.
- Advise Inventory Control Manager of uncategorized or slow moving products and moves merchandise to assigned areas.
- Remain knowledgeable in all Food bank products.
- Maintain up to date knowledge of sorting management procedures in order to implement ways to improve and maximize efficiency.
- Conducts sorting area inspections for pest control and cleanliness; work with Pest Control contractors to eliminate and prevent problems.
- Conduct equipment inspections to ensure equipment and facility are operational
- Advise Operation Manager of malfunctions, breakdowns and needed repair or replacement.
- Complete cleaning logs and perform or oversee the cleaning, disinfecting, weeping, mopping of salvage section of warehouse in accordance with Feeding America and Second Harvest procedures and to ensure Board of Health requirements are met.
- Work with Operations Manager to obtain approval for expenditures for purchases, supplies, maintenance of equipment or salvage facility area in accordance with established guidelines; identifies ways of reducing expenses and improving efficiency.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Knowledge, Skills, Education and Experience Required
High school diploma or GED
ServeSafe Certified - Manager (or within 60 days)
Two years customer service experience for diverse groups of people and audiences
Experience operating a forklift and pallet jack (electric and manual)
Ability to speak in front of large groups of people
Ability to work with a highly diverse and rotating volunteer groups
Ability to effectively train, oversee, lead and motivate out volunteers
Ability to stay organized and manage multiple tasks at once
Ability to effectively communicate, both written and verbally
Ability to lift up to 60 pounds frequently.
Ability to stand and work for long periods in a warehouse that will reach temperatures in the high 90's.
