The City of Topekas Utilities department is seeking a dynamic, hard-working individual to serve as its Utility Project Inspector. This individual plays a critical role in ensuring the quality, safety and successful completion of construction activities for Utility infrastructure.
This is an entry-level position that makes a positive and visible impact in the local community. Complete on-the-job training is provided, and career advancement is available.
Primary duties include:
- Reviewing and interpreting construction plans, blueprints, maps, legal descriptions and drawings.
- Inspecting utility construction, renovation and repair work for quality, materials and workmanship.
- Preparing and maintaining construction progress reports and project records.
- Performing materials testing in both a field and laboratory setting. This includes making routine computations for record drawings, calculating construction quantities and verifying locations.
- Making contact with property owners and residences and coordinating communication when needed.
The ideal candidate:
- Is a highly motivated self-starter.
- Thrives in a mobile work environment and possesses excellent navigational skills.
- Has an aptitude for math.
- Is an excellent communicator with the ability to interact effectively with a variety of audiences.
- Has an aptitude for technology or a willingness to learn.
Minimum qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent required. Must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topekas insurance carrier and possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.
Utility Project Inspector (Engineering Tech I) - $18.65/hour

- One year of experience in construction and inspection field, or one year of high school level training in the Engineering field.
Utility Project Inspector II (Engineering Tech II)- $21.63 hour

- Three years of related experience with one year as an Engineering Technician I preferred. Preferred graduation from an accredited technical school program or an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in the field of Civil Technology.
