The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of highly skilled technical work in inspection of highway construction projects, field testing quality control tests on materials, verifying quantities, documentation of daily construction activities, contracts, employee interviews, and construction checklist. Complete administrative documentation and training other ADOT personnel on assigned construction projects. Will normally be assigned to more than one area of construction and can be subject to irregular work hours. Overtime may be required including working nights, weekends and holidays. Occasional overnight travel may be necessary. Will be required to operate a state vehicle in the course of state business.
Inspects highway construction on an ongoing basis to assure compliance with contract and with State and Federal standards, inspections and examinations are made of materials, surface conditions, proper tracking, structural features, and other relevant factors.
Inspects and examines engineering project records, field notes, computations, and other documentation to assure that methods of measurement and bases for payment are in accordance with projected trends, specifications, special projects, and other extra work orders.
Confers with construction engineers and contractors regarding construction in progress and its conformance to specifications and construction plans, answers questions, and resolves problems.
Performs field materials tests on soils, aggregate bases, asphalts, and concretes for quality assurance.
Consults manual, rulebook codes, or regulations in order to find exact required course of action, determination or authorization.
Logs or records all work flowing into the work unit, processed, or flowing out, in order to have accurate history of work or work performed.
Attends training, safety meetings and participates in AMS goals for the District.
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of civil engineering related to the construction of state highway road systems
Construction inspection methods, procedures, and techniques
Construction materials testing procedures
Standards, policies, and procedures applicable to the area of assignment
Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) traffic control for work zones
Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, Chat, Calendar, and Google Drive), Microsoft programs (Word, Excel) and Adobe Acrobat
Skills in:
Work Scheduling and management
Analysis and preparation of materials field testing data
Operation of equipment for completion of assigned duties
Effective verbal and written communications
Ability to:
Operate and maintain a variety of construction quality control equipment
Read and interpret a variety of construction documents, including highway maps and plans
Plan, coordinate, analyze, and perform multiple tasks and inspections
Establish and maintain work relationships
High School Diploma or GED.
One year experience in inspecting minor highway construction projects, hot mix & concrete plants; or performing administrative/construction records or related duties.
A physical is required
Must possess a valid state Driver's License with an acceptable 39 month driving record.
American Concrete Institute (ACI) Certification or Arizona Technical Testing Institute (ATTI) Certification within 12 months of being hired.
This position requires possession of a valid Arizona Class D Driver License. Candidates for this position must complete and sign PART 1 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment at the time of interview, which will allow ADOT to obtain the candidate's motor vehicle record (MVR). If considered, PART 2 of the State of Arizona Application for Employment allows a record review and reference check. The most recent 39-month period shown on the MVR will be reviewed in accordance with A.A.C. R2-10-207.11 (H) and (I). The review must show an acceptable driving record prior to any offer of employment being made by ADOT. Employment is contingent upon an acceptable MVR and record review/ reference check.
