Job description


Under general supervision, performs skilled technical work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of Traffic Signal equipment & control devices. Work involves repairing and maintaining electrical and electronic Traffic Signal systems, adjusting and repairing equipment, supervising subordinate staff; and responding to inquiries. Work also involves responding to emergency repair calls on a 24-hour basis. Responsible for making repairs in a variety of adverse weather conditions. Reports to the Traffic Signals System Superintendent

Installs and inspects Traffic Signal equipment, including underground wiring control boxes, signal heads, and traffic counters; trains in the use of equipment, as time and workload permits.
Replaces and programs micro-processor Traffic Signal controllers; makes field adjustments in signal timing as directed by supervisory staff.
Responds to emergency repair calls and complaints, on a 24-hour, 2-hour response basis; makes appropriate repairs in varying weather conditions.
Locates and marks underground Traffic Signal facilities.
Works with and close to energized electrical circuits.
Operates a variety of heavy equipment, including dump trucks, self-propelled equipment, aerial lift vehicles, trencher/backhoe equipment, digger derrick, etc.
Operates a variety of equipment such as computer, controller test equipment, voltmeter/Ohmmeter/ammeter, master traffic control panels, hand tools, power tools, etc.
Monitors and makes adjustments to traffic control system through a central computer; logs all equipment inventory, maintenance tasks, and emergency response calls on a computer; generates work schedules, calendars, and reports from computer.
Assists in overhead sign installation and maintenance.
Receives and/or reviews various records and reports including maintenance and repair reports, plans for signals, and wiring diagrams.
Refers to Traffic Manual (MUTCD), electronic equipment schematics, supplemental MUTCD, manufacturers' manual, etc

Graduation from high school supplemented by vocational course work in electronics or electrical repair, 1 to 2 years of experience in the maintenance, and repair of electrical and electronic control devices desirable; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Requires a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License within 90 days of employment.
Certification by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Journeyman level Electrician is desirable. Must be certified by IMSA as a Traffic Signal Technician, Level II (or certifiable within 24 months of employment). Must possess a valid commercial driver's license or be able to obtain within 90 days of employment.
  • Knowledge of the principles of electrical, electromechanical, and electronics theory as related to Traffic Signal repair and maintenance.
    Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment employed in the maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic equipment.
    Knowledge of the design and installation of Traffic Signals and sign systems to facilitate proper and efficient traffic flow. Has general knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in Traffic Signal installation and repair work.
    Ability to diagnose the repair of malfunctioning Traffic Signals and related equipment.
    Ability to read and interpret engineering diagrams.
    Ability to respond to emergency calls on a 24-hour basis.
    Ability to work from an aerial device suspended above ground.
    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
    Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
    Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments, or directions from superiors.
    Ability to read a variety of engineering plans, circuit diagrams, work orders, reports, etc.; to prepare purchase orders, repair records, engineering plans, circuit diagrams, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
    Ability to speak to people with poise, voice control, and confidence.
    Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form, and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
    Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.
    Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including traffic engineering and electrical terminology.
    Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages.
    Ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.
