Job description

Physical Ability test is scheduled for February 28, 2023.

Candidate Physical Ability Test

This position is responsible for assisting in the design, installation, and maintenance of traffic signs and pavement markings.

  • Assists in setting up work zones and detour routes; places cones, barrels, safety signs, and message board in compliance with MUTCD standards; flags traffic.

  • Assists in the design and creation of traffic control and specialty signs using specialized sign and graphic design software programs.

  • Inspects signs in city work zones; oversees and participates in the cleaning, repair, removal, or replacement of signs; checks for retroreflectivity.

  • Performs zone inspections of blind corners for sight distance issues; performs inspections of signs for visibility; trims overgrowth from signs and intersections.

  • Responds to on-call after hours calls for the repair or replacement of signs or the installation of traffic control barricades.

  • Assists in performing long-line and short-line paint operations for roadways, parking lots, and right-of-way pavement markings.

  • Assists in performing parking lot and hand-line thermoplastic operations.

  • Assists in the installation, replacement, or removal of raised pavement markers and delineators.

  • Assists in the programming and installation of vehicle counters.

  • Assists with maintaining sign and markings inventory; stocks truck with necessary tools and equipment.

  • Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

  • Knowledge of the installation, maintenance and repair of street signs and traffic control devices.

  • Knowledge of work zone safety principles.

  • Skill in the maintenance and operation of job-related tools and equipment.

  • Skill in problem solving.

  • Skill in prioritizing and planning.

  • Skill in interpersonal relations.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Traffic Engineering Supervisor and/or Traffic Sign & Marking Technician III assign work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include MUTCD guideline, the city codes of ordinances, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related technical duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the work.

  • The purpose of this position is to assist in the maintenance and repair of city street signs and traffic markings. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency, effectiveness, and safety of city streets.

  • Contacts are typically with co?workers, other city employees, contractors, vendors, and the public.

  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.

  • The work is typically performed in a stockroom, shop, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

None.

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or GED equivalent, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA); and

  • Six (6) months recent experience in the use of hand tools, power driven tools, light/medium automotive equipment, and materials for maintenance/repair work.

  • Possession of a current/valid IMSA Work Zone Traffic Control and Safety certification preferred.

  • Possession of a current/valid IMSA Signs and Markings Level I certification preferred.


CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT/PROMOTION/DEMOTION/TRANSFER:

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. (PBA 09/10/01)

  • Employees in this position must obtain and maintain an IMSA Work Zone Traffic Control and Safety certification within eighteen (18) months of employment/promotion/demotion/transfer.

  • Employees in this position must obtain and maintain an IMSA Signs and Markings Level I certification within eighteen (18) months of employment/promotion/demotion/transfer.

  • In an emergency and/or standby situation, an employee in this position must be able to report to his/her regular workstation in a maximum of 30 minutes from the time of notification. (Sec. 2-30. (2) / PBA 1/9/95) This requirement must be met within six (6) months of employment/promotion/ demotion/transfer. (See Condition for details.)

  • An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including a criminal, credit, past employment, and reference checks.

  • Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy, which includes pre-employment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 08/13/12)

  • Must meet the City of Dothan's employment physical standards, which include drug/alcohol testing.

Qualified applicants will be evaluated on training and experience as documented on their application. This evaluation will comprise 50% of their final grade. The agility test will comprise the other 50% of the final grade.

The agility test is scheduled for Tuesday, February 28, 2023.

Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will receive an email notification to self-schedule for the agility test. You MUST self-schedule online or you will not be allowed to take the test.

You will be allowed nine (9) minutes and thirty (30) seconds to complete four (4) stations. Plan to be at the testing site for a few hours.

NOTE: An applicant on vacation is responsible for attending the examination on the date scheduled. An applicant falling under federally protected leave (i.e., FMLA, USERRA) is responsible for notifying the Personnel Department in writing no later than the closing date by emailing jobs@dothan.org.
