Job description

Traditional Trades Advancement Program Member - Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park

Summary:American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, is seeking one member to be a part of the Traditional Trades Advancement Program (TTAP). The Member will contribute to a variety of historic preservation projects alongside Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park staff.

TTAP is a program intended for enthusiastic individuals who possess an interest in gaining experience in the field of historic preservation and construction basics. No background or previous experience in construction or historic preservation is required. Training for all tools and activities will be provided by park staff professionals.

Location Details/Description: Hawai'i Volcanoes, located on Hawai'i Island, rises from sea level to 13,679 feet of elevation and encompasses Kīlauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, and Mauna Loa, the world's largest shield volcano. The park covers over 3200,000 acres - half of which is designated wilderness. The park is home to many species of wildlife, such as 'Ōpe'ape'a (Hawaiian Hoary Bat), two sea turtles species (Honu'ea and Honu), 'Īlio Holo I Ka Uaua (Hawaiian Monk Seal), four species of honeycreepers, the nēnē (Hawaiian goose), and 'ua'u (Hawaiian petrel).

Position Overview: TTAP members will work on a variety of different projects over the course of the term, including but not limited to, carpentry, painting, roofing, stonework, glazing, inspection, and retrofitting, routine maintenance on buildings and grounds. Planned projects for the term include retrofitting and replacing historic wood and windows and stone chimney repair, staining, and stripping on the 1877 Volcano House. Additionally, the TTAP members will complete historic stone refit and rehabilitation at the Nāhuku stone restroom. Leadership will be provided by skilled NPS staff.

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

Schedule: 4/10 work schedule; Monday - Thursday 6am-4:30pm

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $720/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Commuting Allowance: A commuting allowance may be available to TTAP participants. Further details will be provided in an interview.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the TTAP member and not provided by ACE or the NPS.

Professional Development Funds: The TTAP member will have access to $1,000 of professional development funds that can be used for approved purposes.

Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support. Specific training may includeOSHA Certification and Historic Preservation Fundamentals courses. NPS will offer all types of on the job /online trainings following all safety standards.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required by U.S. government contracts
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass the required two-part criminal history check.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

Preferred:

  • Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a minimum of a high school diploma and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as construction trades and the use of hand and power tools.
  • Knowledge of one or more trade practices, such as masonry, carpentry, roofing, mechanics, and/or painting.
  • Familiarity with construction and craftsmanship.
  • Basic familiarity with common factors in deterioration of buildings and structures.
  • Ability and willingness to use and care for common hand tools and portable or stationary power tools associated with the trade (e.g., hammers, saws, drills, planers, etc.)
  • Deep interest in preserving history.
  • A career interest in building trade skills and/or historic preservation

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions:

  • Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. Manual dexterity required for use of various tools, computer keyboard/mouse and other office equipment. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch. Ability to hike over rough terrain.
  • Vision Requirements: Requires close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus.
  • Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently moves up to 50 lbs., ability to move up to 50 pounds.
  • Environmental: Outdoor and indoor conditions. Work environment conditions can change frequently; working under adverse weather conditions and in various climates.
  • Noise Environment: Moderate to high noise such gas-powered chainsaws and other hand and power tools.

Environmental Conditions/Hazards: The ACE member(s) may encounter environmental conditions/hazards including extreme heat or cold, rocky terrain, swamp or wetland conditions, biting insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. The member is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources.

Special considerations: The island of Hawaii is subject to high concentrations of volcanic fumes, especially sulfur dioxide gasses. The fumes are known to be hazardous to unborn fetuses and persons with heart and respiratory problems. The long term effects on normal healthy persons is unknown.


Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety:If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided by the NPS. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the NPS. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), typically provided by the NPS, will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to NPSand ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.
