Job description

The Tourism Coordinator's role is to create and manage a comprehensive program of tourism development and promotion for Montgomery County. The primary responsibility of the Tourism Coordinator is to grow tourism-related revenues in Montgomery County through the effective use of strategic planning, leadership skills, community assets, industry knowledge and relationships, and evolving tourism practices.

  • Serve as contact person for all tourism inquiries via phone, web-site contacts, and email messages in a timely manner.
  • Network with the community, surrounding communities and other regions, as well as tourism partners to generate leads, marketing activities, and media opportunities.
  • Develop and manage a database of tourism prospects and short term rental prospects who are not currently paying occupancy tax (goal is to increase the number of short term rental occupancy tax payers).
  • Develop an occupancy tax registration system and database for current and prospective prospects.
  • Create and distribute e-newsletters promoting tourism and County events.
  • Create and distribute media kits and press releases.
  • Operate under the general direction of the Economic Development Director.
  • Assist with the Tourism Development Authority website, Discover Uwharrie, development and content management, creating fresh, relevant content as needed. *Must have knowledge of website platform: Webflow.
  • Create and manage content (alongside the Welcome Center's Director) for the Discover Uwharrie Facebook, Instagram, and other social media accounts. This includes increasing followers, tracking statistics, and implementing marketing strategies for social media accounts.
  • Oversee the TDA budget, making decisions on spending priorities, and keeping accurate and detailed records including invoicing and payment receipts.
  • Represent Montgomery County at approved conferences, all local events, and promotional opportunities.
  • Oversee all TDA funded and Discover Uwharrie Welcome Center events.
  • Oversee all Welcome Center operations and Welcome Center Staff (Welcome Center Director & Assistants) based on guidance from immediate supervisor, the Economic Development Director.
  • Develop Montgomery County's overall marketing message, as well as marketing, advertising, media and public relations strategies and tactics; identified target demographic, monitored competition, and adjusted strategies accordingly.
  • Create a catalog of, and maintain a current working knowledge of, all Montgomery County assets (visitor assets - outdoor rec, restaurants, small businesses, etc.).
  • Design and create tourism marketing materials including written content and photography, such as a visitor's brochure/flyer, Annual Events postcard, Holiday Events postcard, Montgomery County Welcome Guide, and Montgomery County Visitor's Guide.
  • Represents the Uwharrie/Montgomery County area in cooperative local, regional, and statewide promotional efforts; develops and maintains a positive relationship with the business community and maintains public awareness of tourism issues and advertising opportunities.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general budget, financial reports, and government regulations.
  • Knowledge of website development (Webflow), social media, Canva, Microsoft Office and Adobe products.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and department plans and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from assembly, administration and the general public.
  • Bachelor's degree in advertising, marketing, hospitality and tourism, public relations or closely related field or four years of experience in advertising, marketing, hospitality and tourism, public relations or closely related field.
  • Knowledge of special event management, economic development, writing, graphic design, and media relations. Preferably with management experience involving supervision of employees.
  • Work is in an office setting but will require mobility during special events and conferences. In this position, it is necessary that the hours and days of the week be flexible (holidays and weekends are occasionally required).
  • Travel and attendance at town, regional, or state meetings, conferences and events is required.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to twenty pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty pounds.
