POSITION TITLE: Assistant Professor of Orchestral Studies and Opera Theatre

POSITION DETAILS:

This is a full-time, tenure-track position in Orchestral Studies and Opera Theatre beginning in August 2024. The successful candidate will serve a highly diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students as a progressive, inclusive, and creative educator, leading the University Symphony Orchestra and Opera Theatre, and teaching and mentoring graduate students in orchestral conducting. The successful candidate will be involved in the development of inclusive programming and will be responsive to the needs of diverse learners.  

The classification annual salary range for this position is $64,860 - $143,928; the anticipated annual starting salary is $74,642. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Additional courses in musicianship, theory, or music history will be assigned according to the candidate's qualifications and the needs of the School of Music.
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate a significant track record as a professional conductor and as a teacher/orchestra director at the collegiate level.
  • Other duties will include organizing on-campus concerts; traveling to regional festivals and conferences; recruiting both students and potential colleagues from diverse backgrounds; and serving in various faculty roles including committee assignments.  
  • Successful applicants will demonstrate competence in creating inclusive learning environments and actively engaging the campus and Sacramento communities. 
  • Individuals committed to serving students from historically underrepresented backgrounds such as women, first-generation college students, BIPOC students, students with disabilities, and students with intersectional identities, through teaching, mentoring, service, or administration are especially encouraged to apply.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree and at least three years' experience conducting college orchestras and at least three years' experience conducting professional orchestras.
  • Demonstrated success as an opera conductor at the university and professional level. 
  • Demonstrated success teaching in classroom settings at the college level.
  • Experience teaching graduate students in conducting.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Additional high level mentored training as a conductor in the academy or beyond.
  • Evidence of strong interest and experience in student recruitment, community outreach, leadership in youth music education.
  • Experience and interest in conducting new music.
  • Potential to serve successfully on Sacramento State School of Music committees.
  • Ability to work with a diverse student population and to embrace cultural diversity in his/her/their work.
