Whole Life Engineering (WLE) is responsible for ensuring our products are Safe, Reliable, Maintainable and delivered on time. WLE consists of multiple disciplines that support engineering, our program offices and our customers. Our WLE disciplines participate in the total life cycle of our products from conception to deactivation. Our focus area is product support, including the following disciplines: Reliability System Safety and Supportability.

Job Summary:
Whole Life Engineering seeks an experienced Technical Writer / Illustrator based out of Tewksbury, MA. In this role, you'll be responsible for executing and leading Technical Documentation tasks, including written documentation and technical illustration, in the area of Integrated Logistics Support (ILS).

Responsibilities to Anticipate:
Leading the planning and documentation of preventative and corrective maintenance events for systems deployed globally
  • Leading the development and documentation of ILS strategies for various programs as they transition from development or production into sustainment
  • Developing and maintaining technical documentation including:
    • system functional theory
    • operations
    • preventative and corrective maintenance
    • schematics
    • illustrated parts breakdowns from compiled engineering technical reports
    • drawings and parts lists
    • train the trainer Radar courses
    • identify required student Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs), and Programs of Instruction (POIs).
  • Participating in IETM validation including customer conferences to ensure manuals conform to contract requirements, identification of supplier manual content requirements, budget and schedule compliance and the conduct of peer reviews.
  • Developing illustrations, graphics and flow diagrams to support contract deliverable documentation
  • Coordinating with Technical Trainers to identify and provide technical manual documents to support Organizational Level training courses.
  • Reporting on and consolidating various data points to track trends that help inform leadership of Sustainment activity
  • Collecting, monitoring and reporting Monthly Repair or Spares Cycle Time Metrics, received assets, in process work and backlog & turnaround time on Line Replaceable Units (LRU)
  • Participating in Earned Value Measurement System preparation and review
  • Presenting and participating in Program Reviews, external customer meetings and team status meetings


This role is posted as HYBRID. Commuting costs to and from the Tewksbury. MA facility are the responsibility of the incumbent.

This job may require local travel to our other New England offices.

Qualifications You Must Have:
Typically Requires: Bachelor's degree and 5 years of relevant experience OR an Associate's degree and 7 years of relevant experience OR a relevant advanced degree and 3 years of experience. In absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience is required.

Employment Experience:
  • Experience with technical writing or documentation or development of training materials
  • Experience developing graphics, illustrations and/or simple animations for technical manuals in a military or civilian environment
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance. US citizenship is required as only US citizens are eligible for a security clearance.


Qualifications We Value:
  • Experience developing technical documentation, training materials or conducting courses for the department of defense or foreign military customers
  • Familiarity with standards-based, XML tagging processes and designs and applications for data product developments and engineering to include developing illustrations, tagging and build rules with S1000D, MIL-STD 3031, MIL-STD 40051-1 and -2, 2361, MIL-PRF 38784, MIL-DTL 24784, SCORM, TRADOC 350-70, NAVAIR INSTRUCTION 13034, MIL-HDBK 29612 MIL-HDBK 1222, and others.
  • Experience developing vector-based technical illustrations for commercial or military hardware technical manuals
  • Experience with developing illustrations in accordance with a standard such as S1000D, military specifications (MIL-SPEC) or in accordance with multiple specifications, such as MIL-STD 3031, MIL-STD 40051-1 and -2, 2361, MIL-PRF 38784, MIL-DTL 24784, SCORM, TRADOC 350-70, NAVAIR INSTRUCTION 13034, MIL-HDBK 29612, MIL-HDBK 1222, and others.
  • Experience with basic computer animation skills
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, PTC IsoDraw, or similar software
  • Experience using, manipulating, and exporting artifacts from 3-D CAD models, using PTC Creo, Solidworks, Autodesk, or other CAD-based software
  • Experience with XML based IETM editors such as ArborText or Eagle Publishing System (EPS)
  • Experience with Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe Captivate
  • Experience with MS Office Suite and MS Project
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise cultural sensitivity
