Job description

Requisition Id 9922

Purpose

The Thermal Energy Storage Group in the Buildings and Transportation Science Division (BTSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified candidates to fill a Technical Professional Staff position. The work in this group supports the U.S. DOE’s Building Technologies Office, Geothermal Technologies Office, and other customers by developing state-of-the-art Thermal Energy Storage (TES) and low-temperature geothermal technologies and their integration with buildings and electric grids. Research areas include high-performance TES materials and equipment, integration of TES with buildings’ heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, water heating, and appliances, as well as building envelope and other thermal systems, modeling and simulation of TES systems, advanced controls and sensors for TES, and utilization of low-temperature geoThermal Energy in buildings.

Major Duties / Responsibilities

You will be responsible for coordinating the design and fabrication and/or conducting laboratory tests on TES, heat pump, ground heat exchanger, and other advanced building equipment prototypes. This job requires you to maintain instrument systems, wire the instruments to the data acquisition system, program the data acquisition system, and operate the environmental chambers and other test facilities according to the test plan. You wil also  be responsible for troubleshooting equipment issues and identifying issues with the test setup that may result in erroneous data.  You will also develop piping and instrumentation diagrams.

You will deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications

You must have earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, M.S. preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

One to five years of previous industry experience is highly desired, especially in the fields of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC&R), water heating, or appliances. You should possess a strong background in the design, development, or laboratory testing of TES or HVAC&R equipment.  Knowledge of how HVAC&R, low-temperature geothermal, and TES systems are installed and operated in the field is also desirable.

Expertise in any of the following areas is of particular interest: (a) thermodynamics, (b) instrumentation (e.g., thermocouples, RTDs, power meters, pressure transducers, etc.), (c) capacity and efficiency testing, as well as field evaluation, of HVAC&R, low-temperature geothermal, and TES equipment.

You should have the ability to work within a team of researchers, engineers, and technicians to successfully design, build, and evaluate advanced TES and other Thermal Energy equipment and systems.  Excellent communication skills (oral and written), as well as strong interpersonal skills to support team building, partnering, and leadership, are required. For more information, please contact Dr. Xiaobing Liu (liux2@ornl.gov).

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.

We accept Word (.doc, .docx), Adobe (unsecured .pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), and HTML (.htm, .html) up to 5MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.
