Job Description
Sunnova Energy is searching for a Tax Senior Director to support the growing tax function at Sunnova. Reporting to the Senior Vice President, Tax & Financial Operations, this #2 tax leadership position will be responsible for the day-to-day leadership for its primarily US and US territory tax function, including Puerto Rico and Pacific-island territories. This person will have an enterprise focus and will ensure that tax planning and tax practices are aligned with business processes and overall strategy. Strong experience in Subchapter K of the Internal Revenue Code and hypothetical liquidation at book value (HLBV) are important qualifications. This person’s success in the role will also be measured by the tax group’s ability to scale with the organization as appropriate. Ideal candidates will have exceptional financial and business acumen and will bring commercial judgment, creativity, and proven leadership to a growing tax team.
Tax Senior Director Responsibilities
- Provides day-to-day oversight for the preparation of all direct and indirect tax returns and statutory filings.
- Oversees and reviews Federal, State, and U.S. territory corporate and partnership income tax returns and meets all internal and external timelines.
- Reviews contractual arrangements entered into by the company as well as reviews purchase agreements, investment agreements and distribution agreements from a tax disclosure and tax due diligence standpoint.
- Oversees all aspects of quarterly and annual financial reporting for income tax.
- Oversees tax forecasting activities and ensures appropriate tracking of uncertain tax positions
- Ensures that the corporation maintains up-to-date tax expertise and awareness of federal and state laws and their impact. Make recommendations and alternatives for protecting corporate resources.
- Proactively, and as requested, prepares and/or presents presentations to a variety of stakeholders on key tax issue developments that impact Sunnova.
- Supports tax and financial statement audits.
- Ensures all issues and research conclusions are adequately documented in tax memos.
- Develops, coaches, and mentors staff.
- Assists with other tax department tasks, as necessary.
Minimum Requirements
- A bachelor's degree, preferably with an emphasis in accounting, finance, economics or a related field
- CPA
- 12+ years’ experience with tax planning, research, and compliance
- 6 years of highly specialized subject matter experience
- 5+ years’ managing multiple, direct reports
- 4+ years of public accounting experience
- Experience with M&A due diligence and integration, structuring transactions, including financing transactions and tax equity is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in accounting or taxation
- Previous experience in energy, and in particular, residential solar
- Strong experience and proficiency in data analytics tools
- Prior tax controversy experience
- Strong experience in Subchapter K of the Internal Revenue Code and hypothetical liquidation at book value (“HLBV”)
