StepStone Tax is currently comprised of 8 individuals who are responsible for providing tax advice to the investment teams and managing global tax compliance and reporting for the investment funds and management companies.
Position Overview
This role will be responsible for managing tax compliance, planning, and advisory for the StepStone management company partnerships and business entities. This individual will report directly to the Director, Tax Reporting and work closely with external CPA firms and internal StepStone teams (accounting, finance, legal, etc.) to implement best practices for all levels of tax reporting.
Essential Job Functions
- Work with external tax providers to prepare federal, state, and local tax returns and computations for StepStone management company business entities
- Review year-end tax returns and workpapers
- Ensure the timely distribution of all draft and final K-1's to partners
- Review and monitor partnership tax allocations, IRC 704(b) and tax capital accounts, and IRC 743(b) adjustments
- Review quarterly taxable income estimates and tax distribution calculations
- Work with external tax advisors to evaluate partnership transactions and communicate potential considerations to various levels of management
- Manage the quarterly and annual tax PBC collection process and coordinate as needed to gather information across multiple StepStone teams
- Review payment vouchers and computations related to foreign withholding (ECI and FDAP), multistate withholding, and other entity level taxes. Timely coordination with various AP teams to process all tax payments.
- Prepare and/or review foreign and multistate withholding reconciliation accounts
- Assist with the formation of new entities (obtain EIN, prepare Forms 8832, etc.)
- Maintain entity listings and tax compliance calendars (tax filings, tax payments, etc.)
- Maintain various trackers including those for partner data, tax notices, and tax payments/refunds
- Prepare responses for tax notices received from federal, state, and local agencies
- Day to day involvement with StepStone management company team members, including assisting with ad-hoc requests
- Assist with the implementation and maintenance of the partner tax documents portal and interface with partners of the firm as necessary to answer tax questions and provide additional detail
Education/work experience requirements:
- Minimum Bachelor's degree required, CPA license or MST preferred
- 5+ years of experience in a combination of Big 4/Industry, experience in asset management industry preferred (private equity, real estate, fund-of-funds, etc.)
- Strong knowledge of partnership taxation, partner capital accounts, and special allocations
- Highly organized with a commitment to quality work
- Must be detail-oriented and self-motivated team player
- Ability to multi-task and manage competing deadlines and priorities
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including an ability to explain complex tax concepts to a non-tax technical audience
- Strong computer skills, including an advanced knowledge of Excel
