Job Title: Tableau Developer (Hybrid Onsite)

Location: Lansing, MI

Duration: 12 Months

Pay Rate: $50/hr

Job Description:

Position Summary:

  1. The Tableau and Power BI Developer for AS-MDHHS is responsible for designing and developing interactive data visualizations, reports, and dashboards in Tableau and Power BI to support business analysis and decision-making within the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).
  2. They will work closely with business stakeholders to understand their reporting needs and translate those needs into technical requirements. The developer will also be responsible for maintaining existing reports and dashboards, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring data accuracy and integrity.
  3. This position will also work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for process improvement and innovation within business intelligence. They will participate in special projects and work groups to provide technical expertise and support in the development and implementation of new solutions. The developer will also provide input to standards and best practices for data visualization and reporting, ensuring that all stakeholders have access to consistent and accurate insights.

Duty 1 - General Summary of Duty 1 % of Time 75

Develop and maintain Tableau and Power BI reports and dashboards to support business analysis and

decision-making.

Individual tasks related to the duty.

Design and develop interactive and visually appealing Tableau and Power BI reports and

dashboards that enable business stakeholders to access, analyze, and interpret data.

Work closely with business stakeholders to understand their reporting needs and translate

those needs into technical requirements.

Offer the best-fit alternative solution when appropriate (knowing when to favor Tableau, Power

BI, or another tool given a situation).

Create complex calculations, measures, and calculated fields in Tableau and Power BI to support

reporting and analysis needs.

Develop and maintain data sources in Tableau Prep and Power BI Data Flows, including connecting to and extracting data from various data sources, transforming and cleaning data as

necessary, and ensuring data accuracy and integrity.

Collaborate with data engineers and other technical teams to ensure data is structured and organized in a way that enables efficient and effective reporting and analysis.

Troubleshoot issues with existing reports and dashboards, and work with stakeholders to identify and implement solutions.

Stay current with Tableau and Power BI best practices and new features and recommend process improvements and optimizations to enhance reporting capabilities.

Train and support end-users on how to use Tableau and Power BI reports and dashboards effectively.

Produce documentation for all Tableau and Power BI reports and dashboards developed, including technical specifications, user guides, and training materials.

Duty 2- General Summary of Duty 2 % of Time 15:

Participate in special projects and the development of standards and best practices for BI.

Individual tasks related to the duty.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for process improvement and

innovation within business intelligence.

Participate in special projects and work groups to provide technical expertise and support in the

development and implementation of new solutions.

Provide input to standards and best practices for data visualization and reporting to ensure

consistent and effective communication of insights to stakeholders.

Duty 3 - General Summary of Duty 3 % of Time 10

Perform Special Assignments, as required.

Individual tasks related to the duty.

Lead an Agency or Division task force.

Make presentations about complex data processing applications to customers, Agency

management, representatives from other State agencies/departments and others in the

technical trade at industry gatherings.

Serve as liaison for the Agency with other state agencies, state, federal organizations and public

vendors.

Make appropriate recommendations to business partners and manager, considering cost

effectiveness of solution, skill sets available, etc.

Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Tableau proficiency: A strong understanding of Tableau software and its various features,

including creating dashboards, visualizations, and reports. Familiarity with Tableau Server and

Tableau Desktop is also important.

Data visualization: The ability to create effective and engaging data visualizations that
