The Surgery Scheduler is responsible for advanced level scheduling of patients for surgical procedures and non-surgical procedures requiring sedation or general anesthesia; scheduling patients into multiple modalities of Radiology; and/or scheduling complex chemotherapy treatment plans. This position is responsible for devising, implementing, analyzing and managing a system for the scheduling of applicable appointments and procedures in a manner which most efficiently utilizes available human and material resources while accommodating the needs of patients, families, physicians, radiologists, surgeons and proceduralists, and the anesthesiology service. Responsibilities include implementing and improving the system for scheduling of surgeries, procedures, appointments and treatment plans, publishing and distributing the daily schedule, processing post-appointment data, reconciling records, analyzing data integrity, producing reports and implementing scheduling system changes. This position must coordinate the needs of multiple parties in order to continually improve scheduling and report efficiency in their department. Primary Functions (may include, but not limited to):
- Performs all level of scheduling from basic to complex.
- Schedule patients accurately and efficiently for all surgical procedures requested.
- Responsible for providing patients with all necessary information regarding their procedure. Including, but not limited to special diet or prep instructions, general insurance information, arrival time, dates, locations, post-op information, etc.
- Ability to communicate effectively and in a friendly manner with patients, other staff and physicians as well as outside sources.
- Ability to organize work for efficiency and problem solving as related to surgery scheduling and its impact on the physician and unit.
- Serves as a contact for unit and physicians regarding schedules, procedures, or concerns while sharing information and working with manager, supervisor, co-schedulers and physicians.
- Responsible for being up-to-date on all insurance requirements and following all guidelines requested.
- Responsible for documenting scheduled surgeries and ancillary testing in the practice management system. Including person and date which individual spoke to at the hospital, surgery center, referring clinic or imaging center.
- Proficiency in the use of computer systems and Microsoft Outlook.
- Responsible for maintaining effective and accurate daily physician surgery schedules.
- Communicate effectively and compassionately with patients.
- Communicates effectively with staff, management, physicians and outside contacts.
- Represent Mercy in a professional manner related to appearance, communication and the maintenance of patient confidentiality.

Minimum Qualifications
- Education: High school graduate or GED
- Experience: Previous medical office scheduling experience.
- Other: Ability to read and communicate effectively in English, positive attitude and pleasant disposition necessary. Requires good eyesight and hearing ability to balance numerous simultaneous requests.
- Preferred Experience: Previous surgical scheduling experience preferred.
