Job description

Build meaningful relationships with our citizens and visitors at our Parks through active engagement, visibility and education. This position will help the City ensure our parks are welcoming through the increase of education of the Burlington's history, as well as the rules, regulations, and ordinances related to City Parks. This position will be visible and present in all of our city parks, natural areas and beaches. This position includes a range of functions and duties that will include ecological stewardship, trash removal and customer service. Work will be 40 hours a week with shifts starting between 10am- 2pm depending on need during the time of mid-April to mid-October.
  • Provide assistance, information, & education to visitors in our park and waterfront system
  • Assist in coordinating and training the Seasonal Urban Park Rangers
  • Support Full-time Rangers in park management of encampments
  • Conduct routine inspections of BPRW grounds, facilities, and recreational areas
  • Encourage and monitor adherence to ordinances, rules, and regulations, with special attention to unpermitted fires, fireworks, off-leash dogs, alcohol, and smoking.
  • Use of electric bicycles, workplace safety, evacuation protocols, first aid, hand tools, materials etc.
  • Assist in the collection of refuse in park areas as needed
  • Assist in removing graffiti and addressing vandalism throughout the City
  • Be a park advocate, which includes providing excellent customer feedback, to notifying park supervisors if undesirable activity, damage, camping, excessive littering etc. exists within a park
  • High level of customer service in a public atmosphere
  • Able to work efficiently on an independent basis
  • Support volunteer services and other BPRW programs in the parks
  • Attend mandatory trainings and meetings
  • Assist in other job tasks as necessary
  • Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required, reasonable accommodations will be considered.
  • High school diploma or equivalent with 1 year experience in public service.
  • Ability to work flexible hours when the position requires to meet the changing demands of activity in the parks. Ability to work weekends and holidays
  • Regular attendance is necessary and is essential to meeting the expectations of the job functions
  • Ability to understand and comply with City standards, safety rules and personnel policies.
  • Ability to act as an ambassador of Burlington to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all users in line with the Department's goals and objectives.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally both orally and in writing
  • Ability to provide professional and courteous customer service
  • Ability to manage ever-changing situations quickly and reasonably required.
  • Ability to work in and around water required
  • Must be able to work outside in all types of weather; ability to work on your feet all day; able to lift 50lbs
