The Earth & Exploration Science team seeks a Planetary Science Intern to work within the Simulant Development Lab (SDL) at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX. The SDL primarily works with simulant planetary regolith materials. This position is only offered in person and onsite.
** This is a temporary role not to exceed 12 weeks.**
Responsibilities:
- The intern would spend the majority of their time working with and analyzing granular materials.
- Develop laboratory techniques for subsurface density studies.
- Prep samples via sieving, as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requisition Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled at an accredited university.
- Completed at least 45 credit hours.
- Minimum of 2.8 GPA.
Requisition Preferences:
- BS/MS/PhD student in materials science, geotechnical engineering, geoscience or a closely related field.
- Prior experience working in a geotechnical lab.
- Knowledge of Planetary Science and planetary materials.

Essential Functions
Work Environment
Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.
Physical Requirements
Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).
Equipment and Machines
Standard office equipment (PC, telephone, printer, etc.).
Attendance
Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.
