Job description

High Point University is seeking to hire a full-time Student Success Coach. The Student Success Coach is responsible for providing appropriate academic and transitional support to first-year students that is for a specific academic area and advising function. Support is applicable to all aspects of the student's life tasks: academic, personal, social, and career. This position addresses the unique needs of first-year students by providing holistic/pro-active opportunities, academic support/advising, and transition support. The Student Success Coach will also assist in the implementation of programs and services designed to promote academic, personal, and social/emotional success, engagement, and retention of first-year students. This position also requires evening and weekend obligations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:

  • Master's degree required in an appropriate, related field (Education, Counseling, Student Personnel, or others) with 3 or more years of experience in advising and/or in higher education.

Experience and Training:
  • 3 or more years of experience in the field of academic advising, including working with at-risk students, transfer students and students with undeclared major status; required experience in working with students in higher education settings.

Knowledge, Skills, Ability:
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and a student record system.
  • Knowledge about best practices in college transition/retention, and late adolescent development - including social and emotional development, as well as experience working with this age group.
  • Excellent communication/speaking and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent writing both oral and written are required.
  • Ability to analyze and synthesize situations and data, implement appropriate solutions, and create reports; ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment; ability to maintain professional appearance and demeanor in all situations with students, parents, and colleagues, ability to work and thrive positively and collaboratively in an open environment.
  • The ability to work in a collaborative, fast-paced work environment is a necessity for the position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Assists in a year-long orientation program designed to meet the unique academic and social/emotional needs of first year students.
  • Assists with first-year student activities that promote a sense of "belongingness" and "connection" to peers, High Point University, and the community.
  • Assists with the development and dissemination of communication materials (brochures, website, social media, etc.) to enhance the services provided for first-year students including materials for various stakeholders (including faculty and parents).
  • Assists with seminars on topics related to first-year issues (time management, dealing with homesickness, leadership building, etc.).
  • Supports the academic success and progress of first-year students through class attendance monitoring, academic performance monitoring, transitional conferencing, and graduation planning in coordination with the Office of Academic Services.
  • Provides student support through Developmental and Appreciative advising that comprehensively supports the whole student in all aspects of their life tasks - academic, personal, social, and career.
  • Coordinates student academic support: academic advising, academic services/tutoring, Learning Excellence, and Accessibility Resources and Support.
  • Provides academic and transitional advising support to all entering first-year students.
  • Advises on course selection and academic planning, majors and careers, academic progress, and general university policies and procedures.
  • Provides academic advising through group orientation, peer, and individualized contact.
  • Develops rapport, provides training, and serves as an advising liaison with assigned school/departments and their faculty as well as peer advising liaisons to best serve the advising needs of students in the respective majors.
  • Advises first-year students regarding academic requirements and courses for majors - including incorporation of High Point University academic policies and procedures.
  • Provides systematic support for first-year students in undecided/undeclared majors.
  • Provides systematic support for first-year students identified as "at-risk" in coordination with the Office of Student Life.
  • Assists with a First Year Navigator program that matches first-year students to upper-class students who then assist the first-year students with transitioning to college life and developing a sense of "belonging" to the campus community.
  • Maintains confidential records, collects data, and prepares reports related to the functions of advising, planning, evaluation, and assessment.
  • Makes referrals to other university services/offices as appropriate (examples: Academic Services, Registrar's Office, Student/Residence Life, Counseling Services, Office of Accessibility Resources and Services, Career and Professional Development, etc.).
  • Attends Professional Development/Training aligned to the goals of the position.
  • Other duties as identified by the Senior Director of Student Success.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
  • This position directly reports to the Senior Student Success Coach.
