What it's like to be a Steel Estimator

Your role will be vital in our organization, as you'll be responsible for estimating costs and providing accurate project assessments. Each day, you'll dive into different projects, reviewing architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and other project documentation. You'll collaborate with our team to understand project requirements and develop comprehensive cost estimates. Your analytical skills will be put to the test as you assess material quantities, labor requirements, and production timelines.

In this role, attention to detail is crucial. You'll need to ensure that your estimates are accurate and align with industry standards. You may need to communicate with vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors to gather additional information and negotiate pricing. Your problem-solving skills will be critical as you navigate through challenges and find innovative solutions. Your schedule as a Steel Estimator will typically be Monday to Friday, providing you with a great work-life balance.

You should be familiar with estimating software such as Bluebeam Revu, On-Screen Takeoff, or ProEst, as these tools will aid you in creating comprehensive and precise cost estimates. In addition, a solid understanding of architectural and engineering drawings is vital. Being able to interpret and analyze these documents will enable you to determine material quantities and labor requirements accurately. Effective communication skills are key in this role.

You'll need to collaborate with team members, negotiate with vendors and suppliers, and communicate project details and estimates to clients. Strong verbal and written communication skills will ensure clarity and accuracy in your interactions. Last but not least, attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously are essential. You'll be juggling various tasks, deadlines, and priorities, so excellent organizational and time management skills are crucial for success.
