Title:                SST / 504 Coordinator

Division:           Middle School, Upper School or School-wide

Location:          Making Waves Academy, Richmond, CA

Reports to:       Director of Student Support Services

Status:              Full-time, Exempt (Year-Round), CalSTRS Retirement Eligible

Supervises:       N/A

Salary Range:   $85,000 - $95,000

Position Summary

The SST/504 Coordinator provides support to General Education Teachers, Deans, Social Workers and Students throughout all stages of the SST and 504 creation and implementation process. Utilizing the Beyond SST System database, they will consult regularly with general education teachers, deans, social workers, parents, and students to ensure that each team successfully creates and implements appropriate SST interventions. Additionally, the SST/504 Coordinator, utilizing the Beyond SST database, will facilitate evaluation/eligibility determination for 504 plans, develop 504 plans, and monitor the implementation of Section 504 plans. This role will work closely with teachers, interventionists, social workers, deans, outside agencies, and medical professionals to ensure the implementation of Section 504 procedures are successful and operating in compliance with federal and state regulations.

 

Primary Responsibilities

Compliance Management

  • Manage 504 plan processes, including but not limited to plan development, implementation, stakeholder communication, and monitoring to ensure that all SST and 504s are established in accordance with California law;
  • Coordinates Section 504 referral process;
  • Provides notices and consents;
  • Facilitates evaluation/eligibility determination team meetings for Section 504;
  • Schedule, organize and conduct annual or bi-annual reviews of each Section 504 students;
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date data in the school’s Beyond SST Data Management System for all phases of SST’s, and Section 504 students;

Services & Support

  • Participate in Student Study Team meetings; help teachers and learning coaches develop and implement program accommodations and strategies for struggling learners in need of SST interventions and tracking, or who may be eligible for 504 plan and/or referral for special education services;
  • Assist with administering state testing and coordinate the accommodations that are required based on the 504 plan;
  • Attends regularly scheduled professional development with an emphasis on MTSS, SST and Section 504 training meetings; and
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Work Environment

This job operates in an office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers, photocopiers, portable two-way radio transceivers, and smartphones.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to adhere to the following:

  • Frequently walk across the middle and upper school campus.
  • Participate in campus supervision duty each week – Monday through Friday frequency may vary based on the supervision assignment each semester.
  • Lift files, open filing cabinets, bend or stand on a stool as necessary, and sit for long periods.

Travel

Some travel is required for MWA-related events, such as workshops or conferences.

Qualifications

Experience

  • Minimum five years of experience working with students between the ages of 8-18 from historically underserved communities
  • Experience in writing 504 Eligibility and Accommodation Plans
  • Entry-level administrative experience
  • Experience coaching adults, professional development training and implementation
  • Familiarity with MTSS/PBIS, classroom management, accommodations and intervention strategies
  • Ability to meet deadlines on a tight schedule, highly organized
  • Understanding of California Education Code as it relates to student behavior and conduct
  • Experience with inter-agency collaboration for mental health and behavioral support
  • Experience and knowledge of tiered intervention programs for academic, behavioral, and truancy problems in grades K-12.
  • Experience collaborating with parents

Skills

 

  • Highly effective at building relationships, including having professional communication skills with staff, students, and families in the culturally and linguistically diverse MWA community
  • Knowledge of IDEA disabilities
  • Knowledge of classroom interventions, accommodations, and modifications
  • Understanding of student behavior and mental health issues and appropriate interventions
  • Knowledge in understanding in regard to school refusal related to truancy or mental health issues, and distinguishing between the two.
  • Knowledge of scientifically-based and research-validated intervention and instructional programs for reading, math, writing, and behavior management for grades K-12.
  • Knowledge and experience with data-driven instruction linked to scientifically-based and research-validated interventions for grades K-12
  • Ability to adapt and align on school-related initiatives
  • Professional orientation – appearance, communication, organization, and attitude including being goal-oriented, and focused on outcomes
  • Ability to uphold and reinforce school policies and procedures when addressing students and families
  • Ability to work collaboratively, independently and effectively in fast-paced environments with limited supervision
  • Demonstrate an understanding of technology and literacy learning platforms (Microsoft Office Suite, PowerSchool, Canvas, Blackboard, Google Suite, and Calendar, if applicable)

Education

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Advance Degree desired & Special Education background a plus)

Licenses or Certificates Needed

 

  • Employment eligibility will include fingerprints, tuberculosis, COVID-19 vaccination, and/or other employment clearance

Preferred but not required

 

  • Education Specialist, and or General Education credential a plus
  • Experience and understanding of the foundations of functional behavior assessments to develop behavioral interventions for students grades K-12
  • Spanish language proficiency
