Job Details:

The senior medical technologists goal is to optimize patient care by achieving excellence in technical and interpersonal skills. To assist the supervisor by initiating and presenting continuing education in house, revising and updating procedure manuals, maintaining and optimizing the computer system to meet Blood Bank needs. The senior technologist will perform all aspects of stem cell processing. Other duties may include staff scheduling, quality assurance and assisting in compliance to all appropriate standards .

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Consistently applies the corporate values of respect, honesty and fairness and the constant pursuit of excellence in improving the health status of the people of the region through the provision of customer-friendly, geographically accessible and high-value services within the environment of a comprehensive integrated academic health care system.
  • It is the responsibility of the Senior Technologists present to be aware of the work flow and when necessary to provide appropriate direction to Medical Technologists in order that all the demands of the TMC Blood Bank be met, including but not limited to the following:
  • Orders for products and testing be expedited efficiently
  • Blood Bank inventories are adequate
  • Communication between laboratory staff is optimum
  • Being available to handle problems not resolved by parties involved and act as an intermediary for situations that do not necessarily need to be handled by the Blood Bank Supervisor.
  • In the absence of the Blood Bank Supervisor, handling all problems before bringing them to the Medical Director's attention.
  • Arrange coverage for technologists when Quality Control or special duties are being performed.

Performs the following tests and processing in BBTS:

  • ABO and RH typing, antibody screening
  • Resolving complex antibody identifications and finding blood products suitable for transfusion.
  • Compatibility testing.
  • Preparation of blood products and components, following special protocols including NEC, transfusions for infants under 4 months, intrauterine transfusion, product concentration and high hematocrit red blood cells.
  • Washing and deglycerolizing appropriate blood products.
  • Freezing red cells and FFP for future transfusion.
  • Release of blood products to the floors, clinics and ORs for transfusion.
  • Antigen typings.
  • Irradiation of blood products.
  • Computer competency.
  • Entering blood products and components into the inventory.
  • Process autologous and donor directed units.
  • Manual record keeping and logs.
  • Coordinate the influx and outflow of blood and blood products from the Blood Bank to patient floors.
  • Quality control.
  • Communicate information between the Blood Bank and personnel inside and outside of the facility.
  • Inventory control.
  • Equipment maintenance.
  • Rotates through weekend and holiday shifts
  • During emergency situations normal work hours and shift length may not apply.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

Performs the following tests and processing in SCPL:

  • Processing BM/SC on the COBE 2991 for plasma depletion
  • Processing BM/SC on the COBE SPECTRA for red cell depletion
  • Quality control of HPC equipment, reagents and processes.
  • Freezing of BM/SC products in the KRYO 10 controlled rate freezer
  • Preparation of product and infusion cart for transplant
  • BM/SC inventory control
  • BM/SC processing for freezing
  • Knowledge of AABB, FACT and FDA guidelines
  • Viability testing of products
  • Management of patient and donor processing records
  • Sterile technique preparation of wash solutions for BM harvests
  • During emergency situations normal work hours and shift length may not apply.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

Other Responsibilities:

Supervisory Duties:

  • Assists manager or supervisor by coordinating the work of an assigned group of employees.
  • Evaluates available staffing levels and optimizing daily assignments of technologists to meet workflow demands.
  • Relays work instructions, distributes and monitors work.
  • Provides technical training and assistance.
  • Assists in ensuring employees are provided with appropriate resources.
  • Provides recommendations for the most efficient utilization of assigned personnel.
  • May provide employee performance information and report employee performance problems.
  • Intervene when there are communication problems, questions (beyond those routine in nature), or a situation deemed to be difficult in nature, on behalf of the Blood Bank or at the request of a Technologist.
  • Senior Technologists will be responsible for contributing information for consideration during performance evaluations of Medical Technologists.
  • Senior Technologists will be responsible for keeping the Blood Bank Supervisor informed of operations, problems and considerations affecting the Blood Bank.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

EDUCATION

  • A level of knowledge typically acquired through a BS degree in Medical Technology including a year internship in all clinic laboratories is preferred.
  • As a minimum, must have a level of knowledge typically acquired through a Bachelors degree in Biology.
  • Experience in Blood Bank technology, histocompatibility, laboratory procedures and techniques and a strong immunohematological background is preferred
  • Requires a current Medical Technologist registration (ASCP, HEW, CLS, MLT or equivalent)
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of blood bank computer modules is preferred

EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of three years experience in an AABB accredited Blood Bank

LICENSES, ETC.

  • Requires a current Medical Technologist registration:
  • ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathology
  • HEW Department of Health, Education and Welfare
  • CLS Clinical Laboratory Scientist
  • SBB(ASCP) Specialist in Blood Banking
  • BB(ASCP) Blood Bank Technologist
  • Or equivalent

AGE SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:

Possesses and applies the skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. This includes:

  • Knowledge of growth and development
  • Ability to interpret age specific data and response to care
  • Provide age specific communication

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Position requires weekend and holidays rotation and on call for minimally staffed shifts.
  • Typical clinical laboratory or research wet lab work environment
  • Regular exposure to patient and donor blood and blood components
  • Minimal chemical exposure
  • Work may cause visual fatigue due to close examination of large numbers of specimens, microscope use or CRT use.
  • Work requires computer typing
  • Requires frequent use of blood component processing equipment and a blood irradiator
  • Requires cleaning and maintenance of equipment and work benches
  • Requires restocking of workstations with supplies and solutions.
  • During emergency situations normal work hours and shift length may not apply.
