Job Summary
The Senior Paralegal supports the legal work of the attorneys in the Legal Department. Expert in the specific areas of law and regulation applicable to a given legal discipline, the Senior Paralegal is able independently perform and manage matter intake and administration through resolution, legal research, reviewing and identifying issues in legal matters, resolving questions submitted from business units, interpreting and implementing applicable policies and procedures, and working closely and directly with various business units in bringing matters to resolution.
Assists General Counsel and Corporate Secretary, Deputy General Counsel, and Legal Department or other Bank personnel in various corporate functions including corporate governance, regulatory examinations, corporate filings, basic legal research, compilation of legal and business communications, and general file management.
Pay Range: $30.00 - $42.57 - $55.13
Job Responsibilities:
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Engaged in administration of legal matters based on current work assigned to the paralegal.
- Conduct initial legal research and provide a summary of the results and/or drafting a preliminary response to the question being researched.
- Interface directly with business units or third parties - such as participating with attorney in meetings on substantive matters, fielding telephone calls and emails directly from business unit contacts or third parties.
- Perform miscellaneous activities, ad hoc projects, ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, maintaining and enhancing subject matter expertise, and compliance and other training.
ADDITIONAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Performs special projects, and additional duties and responsibilities as required.
- Consistently adheres to regulatory and compliance policies and standards linked to the job as listed and complete required compliance trainings. Accountable to maintain compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Required Qualifications:
- Education level required: High School / High School Equivalency (GED, HiSET, TASC) / Foreign Equivalent.
- Five to ten years' relevant experience, preferably in a law firm or in-house corporate legal department at a mid-to-large sized company with experience in the areas of corporate legal matters, corporate governance, and/or litigation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in paralegal studies or paralegal certificate from an ABA approved program is preferred.
- Some corporate filing (formation, dissolution, etc.) and corporate governance experience preferred.
- New York State Notary Public License preferred.
Job Competencies:
- Broad knowledge of the subject matter and law related to the specific applicable discipline.
- Possess the ability to read, understand and organize basic corporate legal, governance, regulatory and litigation documents.
- Strong understanding of legal concepts and legal research.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook and Excel, and legal technology applicable to specific discipline.
- Highly developed writing and organization skills.
- Attention to detail essential.
- Comfortable handling complex legal concepts, spotting important issues, exercising independent judgment, and making preliminary recommendations.
- Independently introduces, develops and manages new processes and procedures.
- Ability to work independently on complex matters and manage the collaborative effort of a group.
