Description of Job:

As a member of the team, our Senior Import and Export Specialist Professional will support all the business units within Valent all logistics and shipping related matters, ensuring full compliance with applicable customs regulations and internal requirements.

This position will provide comprehensive support to the SCLT and other team members in Valent Biosciences, as a liaison between company facilities, Customs brokers, and freight forwarders. The position coordinates with the operational receiving and shipping teams to ensure compliance with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Other/Partner Government Agencies (OGA/PGA) rules and regulations. This role is responsible for coordination of global Logistics traffic across the network. The Import and Export Specialist will work closely with managers, site directors, commodity managers, brokers, forwarders, suppliers, sales and other tactical planner/buyers, engineering, and production to develop and implement comprehensive International Logistics strategies that support global Valent BioSciences business initiatives. Communicates closely, builds and retains strong relationships with approved freight forwarders, carriers, customers and Valent personnel. Identify and create synergy opportunities across Valent’s business units: focusing on compliance, service optimization, process development and cost reduction. This position will manage and control logistics expenses and third partner service level.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for coordinating movement of products in and out of the country in accordance with legislature, organizational procedures and federal regulations.
  • Manages the necessary documentation and forms for the efficient and lawful execution of all import and export activities.
  • Acts as primary company contact with 3rd party brokerage and freight forwarding companies providing required information for U.S. Customs Electronic Export Information (EEI) pertaining to exports.
  • Assists international shippers with documentation and troubleshooting that may surface involving compliance with U.S. import and export laws and regulations.
  • Reviews documentation submitted to CBP and BIS for accuracy and comprehensiveness. Makes corrections as necessary and notifies appropriate individuals.
  • Provides tariff classifications, country of origin on goods to be processed for export to all appropriate parties, internal & external.
  • Coordinate the day-to-day administrative duties of the Logistics Department including reconciling freight invoices, administering and mitigating freight claims, fielding service calls and reporting/analysis.
  • Monitor all modes of transportation (i.e. rail, air, sea, LTL, TL, parcel etc.), primarily import/exports, brokerage and Customs clearance. Communicate status and/or delays to appropriate parties.
  • Resolve shipment issues and possess the ability to determine when to elevate to management for resolution.
  • Collaborate with suppliers, brokers and other related parties to ensure all required documentation and shipping instructions have been received (i.e. document requirements, routing instructions, tariff codes, etc.) and align with purchase order or operational need.
  • Performs periodic audits to evaluate compliance levels and assists in establishing policies, procedures, and internal controls to promote U.S. import and export laws and regulations.
  • Supports Trade Compliance function by conducting internal audits to ensure VBC is compliant with all US Customs and US agency regulations.
  • Prepares Letters of Credit for imports of AI to ensure VB financial and purchasing terms are met.
  • Files US Treasury Duty Drawback Claims for refunds on imports to the USA.
  • Ensure full compliance and timely resolution for the assignment of HTS classifications for import and export shipments.Maintain Import and Export document files in accordance with Federal regulations and Company policy (i.e. recordkeeping).
  • Maintain knowledge of market and industry trends by attending industry training and/or seminars.
  • Supports the organizational creation and/or refinement of detailed operational and financial performance reporting and KPI/metrics for all logistics activities within purview of role.
  • Thorough understanding of regulatory conditions, rules, and regulations (CFR, International Trade, IATA, USCBP) to manage logistics flows.
  • Collaborate with various partners (business segment management, department leadership, members of the Customs Team) on cross department activities promoting process optimization.
  • Support business practices to implement and utilize automated solutions.
  • Maintains all required certifications needed for legal & regulatory compliance, including Transportation of Dangerous Goods via Air, Ground, and IMDG, Classifying & Removing Waste, and GLP Procedures.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned. Be able to influence others on changes to the supply chain.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a business-related field required.
  • 5-7 years of experience in an import/export administration role.
  • 3-5 years of experience in Logistics, Supply Chain and Planning
  • 3 years of experience in people management
  • Current certification in the Transportation of Dangerous Goods in accordance with the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization, and the U.S. Department of Transportation 49 CFR. Current certification for handling Hazardous Waste required.
  • Practical understanding of US laws and regulations governing exports and imports – 19 CFR.
  • Advanced proficiency using MS Office software – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI, strong knowledge of SAP.
  • Ability to learn or experience with P44, EcoVadis, Datamyne, TMS, and other tech tools.
  • Strong knowledge of SAP experience is a plus.
  • Ability to build relationships and partnerships to collaboratively execute business strategies.
  • Strong negotiation skills and ability to creatively craft win-win scenarios with carriers in all modes.
  • Knowledge of various international logistics, distribution and manufacturing processes, potential failure modes, and critical success factors.
  • Working knowledge of US government Import / Export Regulations including BIS Export Administration Regulations, USMCA requirements and Harmonized Tariff Schedules.
  • Experience in exporting to Mexico, Canada, and other foreign countries.
  • Strong knowledge of Incoterms traded compliance, hazardous mats and filing duty drawback claim.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, reasoning, problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Advanced Excel is required.
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent influencing, relationship, interpersonal and communication (oral and written) skills.
  • Participate in activities with cross-functional teams to help the company meet the goals.
  • Contribute to the overall supply chain strategy.
  • Some travel required.
